I am removing a 3.0 lx mercruiser 96 engine the drive is an alpha one gen 2

Im removing the ngine this weekend and was hoping to get some tips from those who have experience. Things to make sure to do and things not to do.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I need to get her prepped for removal --any special tools. Im going to shoot video so that i have a record of where everthing goes back.

Re: Tips for engine removal please

This will be my first time pulling the drive the boat is new to me. To pull the drive i need to put the boat in forward gear , take off the prop take off the cylinders and remove trhe 6 bolts I might be missing something--Anyway i saw a video on utube and when he removed the outdrive assembly the yolk type attachment was kinda dangling after he pulled it out -Im just curious about getting it reseated when reinstalling - by the way i can leave the gimbal part on there when pulling the engine?? I assume i should get the fluids out of the drive before starting the pull, am i correct?

MARK everything and take digital shots before you pull it!!

I pulled my engine out for the first time about 4 weeks ago. I took several digital photos and labled every wire and hose. Had a buddy help me so that we both had a good idea where everything went back. I was suprised at how easy it was! I took the lag bolts out of the stringers also. Swapped them onto the new motor and checked the alignment and it was spot on!

Just curious, but why remove the leg? Is it to align the motor after only? I have pulled my motor a few times, and left the leg alone. I remove the lag bolts for the front mount, that way the alignment doesn't change. I do have the yammie L4 leg, so maybe that's different?
I do know, that there is a gasket that needs to be replaced when re-installing the leg, so you may as well go buy that so you have it for the install.

You remove the drive:
So you can lift the engine up and out, clearing the exhaust connections.

So you dont damage the splines, coupler, gimble bearing.

So you can set it back in place for all of the same reasons.

And because your STILL have to check alignment whenever you pull the motor. Removing the drive doesn't effect the engine alignment.

atomb, download the right manuals, read the sections on pulling the drive and engine, use or build a very solid hoist, take your time. it's easy. i've pulled my 140 (3.0L) twice and had never pulled an engine before. make lots of notes. keep your body parts out from under heavy things. replace anything that might need it while the engine's out.

Re: Tips for engine removal please

Please, no more guessing on what has to come off, READ the manual.
and no, the cables are removed from inside the boat at the shift plate.,not the other end. No touching the transom housing is necessary.Remove the drive by shifting into fwd ,remove the rams, 6 bolts, and it pulls right off.

Re: Tips for engine removal please

The shift cable, slide and and lever mechanism stays in the bell housing when you pull the drive. Just put the control lever in forward first. You only need the special wrench if you're going to remove the cable.

Pulling the drive is easy and it has the benefit of enabling an inspection of the U/Js, gimbal bearing and whatnot. So by pulling it, you can save a lot of trouble in the future, or discover grief as I just found out. :(

Re: Tips for engine removal please

Most commonly missed items going back together are the ground wires that bolt to the bell housing behind the engine.

And make sure you get the rear mounting bolt, washer, spring "stack" back in the right order.
