Just watched the news about a local fisherman out on Lake Erie robbed, the robbers approached in their boat had some chit chat then pulled a gun, they stole his cash and cell phone and his boat keys, to top it off they stole his fish too, luckily the guy had an extra set of keys on his boat, my gosh I was out there myself Sunday with my 13yr old daughter.

No mercy for these perps. However, I'll give them a chance to swim with a 50 pound anchor shackled around their legs.

Back in the 80s that was too common off the FL Gold coast.

Dropped off a lot after the USCG found several characters of ill repute floating face down with severe leaks in their bodies and no boat. Somebody out there was in possession of a very large caliber rifle.

I kept a Ruger Super Blackhawk aboard but had no occasion to need it.

two lessons learned, keep a extra key tucked away on board, and a extra cell phone, all cell phones will call 911, need not have a active account.
if they are caught, the charges would be, piracy maybe, federal?

When a person goes out fishing, one of the reasons he/she does is to forget about all the crap going on in the world and at home(US). Apparently, we're losing that enjoyment too........ Very sad.......

That definately inhales! Maybe there will be poetic justice and they will try to rob some dope dealer, who is bringing a load in. Bye, bye, robbers!

Never carried my handgun aboard my boat before, but since I am licensed, I think I will start...

Remember if you travel more than 3 miles from the coast, you need a federal permit to carry handguns. A state license doesn't cut it in federal waters. A 10 ga. with slugs works well on unruly large fish and unwelcome guests.

What about a flame thrower? Can you have one of those in Federal waters?

Wajajaja has a good point. Why would this not be considered piracy?

This happened on Lake Erie. The Submerged Lands Act affirmed that along
America?s coasts state jurisdiction extends 3nm except off of Texas and in the Gulf of Florida where state jurisdiction extends 9nm. While in the Great Lakes, states have jurisdiction to international boundaries. (Ram, 2004)

DWC - Yup, I was referring to the reply from the handgun licensee from Georgia. Every gun owner should be aware of the rules for every location they possess the weapon.

Yep...I agree. That said, I have a GFP, license to carry concealed. State boundary goes out 3nm, US boundary rather than that. However, there is no such thing as a Federal Concealed weapons permit, but there are rights and laws that uphold my right to keep and bear arms. So, unless I travel into another states waters that does not acknowledge the GA license, I am ok...

Gun/Handgun regulations are not as strict in GA and many southern states as they are in NY...

You remind me of the blond watching a locksmith open her car with a window bar. She asked if there was a portable version that would fit in her purse.

Response was "Yes, of course. It's called a key.":D

YUP and plays all kind of mischief on a hull as well. If some pirate is going to cast me adrift or worse yet take the boat and put me in the water, I would view that as a threat to do bodily harm and lethal force would be justified in my entirely non legally trained mind. I'd at least be alive to face the consequences.l
