Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Thats going to be a hard one to find used as it was only used in the 93-95 engines(fine spline). I am a dealer for a company that remans cranks and your price would be $355 on crank. Crank comes with a year warranty against defects and workmanship. Crank is welded under flux and sheild gas using a special wire to make repair a higher HRC rating than OEM casting. It is then reground to OEM spec, soda blasted, magnafluxed inspected, oiled and packaged.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

sounds good to me.

please let me know if you send out the crank and have it fixed, buy all new bearings, rebuild the motor for a reasonable price, and have a good running engine.

always having in mind the "fixed" crank when you open her up?

People do it all the time, $300 to fix or $1000 for new, these aren't drag race engines! With the money he saves buying new he could buy all the parts he need to do the whole motor.

If he goes the route of crank repair I guarantee he will have a good running engine if it's all done right using new bearings and proper methods.

Castillo Crankshaft is another outfit that comes highly recommended by the turbo car guys and race boat forums.

I think the bigger concern is the condition of the cylinders, that piston looks like it would have destroyed it. That's a bore and oversize piston and ring job by the looks of it.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Thanks guys for all your input. I'm going to have the block, crank and head inspected by my machine shop and see what they can do. I'm keeping my options open. If it's sketchy to get it repaired then I'll just buy a new one. I don't want to risk all my time on money if it's not 100%.

As for the block, yep #1 cylinder needs to be rebored. The other two are fine but I will have all 3 bored to .030 over. I realize this means all new pistons as well.

Still, I think I can do this whole job for a reasonable price if you compare the cost of buying a new motor.

Cheers.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Update: My machine shop can't do it, though they DO rebuild cranks. Just not journal repairs on a solid crank such as this. My only option would be to send it away to one of the companies that do this service.

Meanwhile I having the block rebored and head resurfaced.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Decided to put this project on hold for now as the parts I need are now more than the motor is worth. (About $2500 after tax including a used crankshaft I found). If I were to send this crank one out to be repaired it would only be about $300 cheaper.

When I find a used powerhead that I can tear down for parts I'll look at rebuilding this one.

Thanks for your advice!

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

people do it all the time.

treu ,people do alot of things all the time.

why dont you ask a outboard manufactuare representitive what they do with a pitted crank.
replace or "repair" .
would only cost a few dollars to repair it than have to send a new crank out.
but hey if people do it why not than.

would you buy a rebuild motor from a rebuilder and told you the crank was pitted and its been welded and machined to spec ???

i would pass it up and find something else.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

What pricing are you using?? Here is list of parts to repair and it is no where close to $2500. At most you will spend even with machine work is $1300 and thats a couple of more bearings, carb kits, impeller, supplys and such. By the way the 'industry" has been repairing outboard cranks for 20+ years and one of the largest(OCC) closed last year due to owners health problems. I would rather have a "reman" crank than a "used" one due to it has been tested/inspected. I have used "reman" cranks for years and have never had a problem with them and I heard that Riverside Marine (OMC/BRP powerhead repair center) in Arkansas uses "reman" cranks.. guess 22,000 powerheads rebuilt you run low on good cranks.
complete gasket set........$36.
center main brg..............$54
crank seal kit..................$35
rod bolts........................$18
upper brg.......................$63
rod brgs.........................$72
wrist pin brgs..................$42
3 pistons........................$190
reman crank....................$355
total.............................$865

Those prices are a lot lower than the quote I got from my local evinrude dealer.

To give you an example the piston & ring kits are $150.25 EACH piston. And the powerhead gasket kit is $97.65.

Also the machine shop quoted 250$ for 3 holes rebored and the cylinder head resurfaced.

What I need for parts is 3 pistons 0.030 oversized, rings, crank, powerhead gasket set, center main bearings & split sleeves, lower and upper crank, wrist pin needle bearing assembly, Rod bearings and retainers and more I'm probably forgetting right now.

As for the crank, I found a used one for $700 so by the time you add shipping (I'm in Canada)... like I said, the reman would only save me about $300 over buying that used one.

One more thing, here we have 12% sales tax so add 12% to everything. When I put everything together, with tax it was about $2500 CDN dollars.

Thanks for all your help guys, I do appreciate it.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Reeldutch i'm not arguing with your logic, anything new especially in an engine is worth the $$$ if it's worth the investment. See the problem is us Canadian boys pay in taxes in a year what you guys over south of the border pay for a new boat. Every year I see 30K of my hard earned cash go to the government. So when I suggest rebuilding a crank for $300 vs $1000 for a new one there is a reason, it's called saving your money as we don't get alot of what we earn in the first place. Oh ya and we pay 13% sales tax on top of everything we buy. He's from Canada too and I feel his pain.

That's not bad, have you priced out a replacement, 6, 7000 dollars?
Get them to say it's for housing costs and claim it under your income tax! JK

But seriously it's what I said in my last post, affording the toys in Canada is somewhat of a luxury when we are taxed to death and trying to find the best prices and cost effective way of doing things is in the north land's best interest.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

yeah I hear ya on the tax up here. That's why I left my job a few years ago and started my own consulting company. At least this way I get to deduct SOME of my expenses.

I'm starting to think my local dealer's prices are about 30% to high! A NEW crank from ishopmarine.com works out to $817 CDN.

I think you all have convinced me to go ahead with this rebuild... I'm going to take my time and shop around until I find a price that works for me.

In the meantime...I've got 2000 Evinrude 70HP 4-stroke that I can work on to keep myself busy;)

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Update: I'm back focused on this project again and the block & head are at the machine shop.

I found another problem (of course) when I brought the block in. One of the locating pins, the one for the upper main bearing had some damage. It may have been bits of that flying around the motor that caused the pitting on the head.

I'm waiting to hear back from the machine shop as to whether they can replace them or not. I should know by Monday or Tuesday if the block & head are worth repairing.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Yon cannot buy the locating pins but I have several used ones salvaged from old engines if you need one. This pin is extremely hard and the way I remove a broken one is to lay a small nut on it and silver solder pin to it, couple of twists and its out, the salvaged ones where cut out of block.
