1989 5.7 OMC Cobra. Getting the old one out was a pain but eventually pulling from the top side I got it out. Now trying to run the old one down it gets stuck at a bend just before exiting out the back. I tied a line to it and tried to pull it through via the bottom but with with the straight sleeve and the nut on the cable it just doesnt want to come through even all lube up.

NEVERMIND STUPID SELOC!!!

Just take the end off the cable and run it up from the bellhousing. I need a full manual this SELOC kills time.

With most shift cable installs you only use the outer core. Then install the tube guides and the core.

eaist way I ever did the dog clutch cobras was to remove the inner wire and set it aside keeping it CLEAN and sand free, then threading the cable to the previously removed gimbal housing then feeding the cable into the hull from the aft end of the transome assy.

1st, with a Cobra never, Oh, I meant, NEVER, remove the inner core wire!!! There is no instruction by OMC, indicating that you should remove the core wire. AND, if you do, the sharp end/edge of the core wire WILL scrape the inner lining of the cable and "bunch" up the teflon liner of the cable. AND, then you'll have difficulty shifting an otherwise good cable..So, just recess the end of the core wire up to the end of the cable. I've seen many people who thrash the cables, housings and stuff on the ground or shop floor, all the time getting dirt, crud and such in the cable opening etc... don't be in a hurry and take your time..BTW, a mercruiser core wire is already removed when you buy it, it's designed to be inserted . 2nd, the shift cable goes into the rubber "tube" from the outside in.... 3rd, there should be installed over the red shift cable, a plastic sleeve. This will allow for the ez insertion (sliding) of the shift cable into the tube. The tube is usually routed behind the power steering cyclinder so it needs to be situated so that it's as straight a shot ,with no tight bends, as you insert the cable (with the plastic sleeve already on the cable.). The cable should already be installed to the pivot hsg when you insert the cable.
