ok so my grandfather gave me this motor he says that before he put it away he ran it out of gas i believe him cause hes always be immaculate with stuff. so i got it and can not get it started when i pump the gas line it flows gasoline down from the intake so i obesely pumped it to much then i pulled and pulled thinking it might be flooded but then gave up after checking the spark plugs and wires it sounded like it wanted to start but never did. i talked to my grandfather and he said to put the slow idle speed on lean but still nothing any ideas before it goes into a shop but ive got to wait tell i have some extra cash also is there a way to drain all the gasoline without tearing the carb all the way off

It sounds like you have a stuck needle valve inside the carburetor bowl. The float is stuck down in the bottom of the carburetor bowl and is not coming up when you pump the bulb. So fuel just constantly flows. You really should take the carburetor off and rebuild it. You might need a new float as well which does not come with the carburetor kit. If you want to try a quick fix, tilt the motor up and lightly tap the bottom of the carburetor bowl with the wooden part of a screw driver. That might loosen up the whatever is stuck in the bowl. Try pumping the fuel bulb again. If you can't get it to stay firm, then rebuild the carburetor (should probably do that anyway).

I concur with psteurer, a new float will come with the OMC kit, I highly recommend it.

Buy an OEM tank, they are more but much better. And no, chucks of rust won't get past the screen on the fuel filter. My relatives ran a metal tank up until last year when it started to leak-it was 30 years old, I run a 1955 on the 7.5 I have, a 60's single line metal tank on my 9.9. Have you ever cut an oil tank open on a house oil heated system, zero rust, the oil won't allow rust on the inside of the tank. They rust on the bottom from moisture causing rust along the seams/bottom of the tank, then they leak and need to be replaced.

If it's in good shape and you are bound to get rid of it I'll pay the shipping and you can send it to me :D

Look at the fuel pump, there should be the word filter printed on the black plastic cap that screws into the pump, the screen fuel filter is under it, it's so fine that it wouldn't allow rust chunks into the carb. Gas lines breaking down is more likely the culprit than the tank.

Did you completely drain the tank and gas hose of old fuel before trying to start it?

It's the carburetor. Either the float doesn't float anymore, is being obstructed, or isn't installed correctly. It's not going to start if the spark plugs are fouled.
