Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

ok head is back on, the compression check is 1= 120, 2=115, 3=110, 4=110, 5=110, 6=105. I replaced the seals on the odd number cylinders, maybe a seal change will help the # 6 cylinder. But I will leave it for now. also Reel was correct the timing is 20 BDC. I will double check my timing and make sure that I didnt get it confused when I checked it last time. But I am almost sure it was what it was supposed to be. I am trying to figure out this DVA meter rig and I will be testing the stator today also. report later, thanks again for all help.

retested the #6 cylinder it was 108. tested boat with the 19 pitch prop..still runs the same as before. Ordered a DVA adapter..hopefully it will be in next week. I will keep you up dated after I do a DVA test. thanks again

I also rechecked the timing ..at WOT it was 20 BTDC on the money..also rechecked spark on each cylinder...thick blue streak on all 6 , not a weak one in the bunch. water leak was fixed with the new seals

yes the throttle plates are in sync and opening to the fully open position.

Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

DVA adapter came in yesterday, tested the orange wires going to the coils they are 212-203 at idle, the brown and brown/white cylinder charge coil wires are 280 and 292 at idle the orange-orange/black power coil wires are 20.5 at idle. my next step is to do a test while out on the water up to WOT and see if any of the numbers are off. I will also try unplugging the rectifier and see if it makes any difference. also did OHM test.. all within tolerance..

Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

ok Testing on the water now done. The CDI information included in an earlier post by Ezeke, says that the brown and brown/white cylinder charge coil wires coming from the stator should be at 400 V at idle, mine is at 280 and 292 at idle. Does this mean the stator is bad or could it be something else???
From idle to WOT the volts do not change. Same for the orange wires that go to the coils from PP, they are all around 280-290 at idle and DOES NOT change as I speed up all the way to WOT. they are supposed to be 150+ at idle and 300-400 V at WOT.
Any other test that I can do besides the Oscilloscope one, as I do not have access to one??? By the way the the orange-orange/black coil wires coming from stator to PP is supposed to be 18 V at idles and it is 20.5, I do not know if this makes any difference or not.
So does everyone agree that I need a new stator??? and what stator would you recommend??? (CDI or OMC) I am leaning towards CDI...o yea Hope you all had a great Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

look at the picture on page 3 ...bottom left side of picture. It says 150v cranking and 400v idling..maybe I am reading it wrong...but in any case my orange wires going to the coils are not going above 300..although they are close..but the fact that they stay the same at all RPMs indicates something wrong ...doesnt it??? Please let me know what else I can test before spending another $240 on this motor.

I forgot to unplug the rectifier...is this something I should try????

Ok ...one more test run before ordering the stator...cant believe I forgot to do that test...need to make a list next time..I thought for sure it was a stator problem when the voltage did not measure as expected...but maybe the rectifier is causing the problem..

From my google mastery:

Rectifier/Regulators:

?These can cause problems ranging from a high-speed miss to a total shutdown. An easy check is to disconnect the stator leads to the rectifier (Make sure to insulate them) and retest. If the problem is gone ? replace the rectifier/regulator.

Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

OK, you've finally proved that the fault is a stator failing.

Order the CDI replacement,

IF................

There are NO signs of the flywheel magnets touching/rubbing against the old stator.

Which means now you need to remove the flywheel and LOOK.

If a magnet contacts the stator then that section of the stator cannot function and the voltage will NOT rise, even with a brand new good stator.

So understand that if there is a problem with the flywheel, a stator will not fix it.

Take it apart and see BEFORE you order that stator to be absolutely sure that you do not need a flywheel instead.

If there are no loose magnets and NO contact marks, rubs showing brightened steel on the perimiter of the stator

THEN

if is time to get into your wallet and order that stator.

If the stator isn't melting you need to put a peak reading meter on it and test it to eliminate it.

Re: 1996 Rude Power Pack questions

whats a peak reading meter?? and how do you test it?? Does it have to be on the motor?? I thought the DVA test proved that the stator was bad. What else could it possibly be??
