Ayuh,.... 1st off,... This isn't a Prop Question....

Yanking the 305 Out,+ dropping in a 350 is the Easiest way...

Re: horsepower

Ayuh,... The 305 is the most anemic V8 built by Chevy,...
Your's already has a 4bbl. Carb...
It's already at the Top of it's potential rating,...
Swapping on an EFI might help a slight amount, But, that'll co$t More than dropping in a 350...

Re: horsepower

Horsepower is a combination of camshaft, compression, and carburetion. The problem with marine engines is you have no transmission (your actually do but it has only one gear) so the engine needs low end grunt to get you going. If you modify the engine for high end horsepower the outdrive cannot handle the high rpm and you would not get out of the hole. Decreasing prop pitch to help with that means the engine now over revs and destroys itself. Marine power is increases are best achieved with engine displacement -- hence the suggestion to replace the 305 with a 350. 305's can and have been modified to develop great top end power in cars but that does you no good in a boat. Swap in a 350 and then prop up and speed goes up but WOT stays the same and your wallet will be a lot less flat.

I know there is ways to get more hp from an engine
QC Edit: Not helpful

Bondo's advice is the best you are going to hear, there's not much you can do with a 305.

You could always put a nitrous oxide kit on it for a few hundred dollars. Of course, then you would need to change props to take advantage of the extra power, and the boat would be useless EXCEPT when you were on the nitrous .....

What do you consider inexpensive?

It takes about 10 HP to gain 1 MPH once you're in the 40-50 MPH range. There's an old saying, "How fast do you want to spend?".

Pretty much if you're trying to stay under $1000, you aren't going to make much difference. If you are looking around $1000, best thing you could do is buy a 350 and drop it in. The extra 15% in displacement gets you 15% more power (about 30 HP) right off the bat, and there's tons of go-fast parts for the 350.

Re: horsepower

Not trying to HI-JACK the thread but as far as mph, if he had a 2bbl carb and did an intake and carb swap what would he(or me) gain? I am assuming he has a 200HP and not 220hp if it has a 2bbl?

86 century how much do you think it would be to turbo charge the 305 and what kind of hp gain would it create

Ahhh, yes, the FE,....
I once had a 312 in a 1960something jet-powered project boat that never went anywhere....
Side-draft Stromberg carbs mounted fore,+ aft on it, if I remember right...

Ayuh,... That's my Assumption... You'd get the 20hp,...
I think the highest hp merc has badged the 305 is 250hp....

There's no "Kit" off the self,+ I don't believe your in a position to design your own, at any price....

About 4 times what it would be to drop in a 400HP 383 .....

If you just want to waste money and play with motors, go ahead and do whatever you like to your 305.

If you want the most cost-effective way to go put more power in your boat, you need a different motor.

Re: horsepower

I would say around 2000 for the merc turbos and carb box I have seen them for less. Could get about 100 or so hp but you have to know how to set them up or you will tear hell out of every thing. And then there is the drive an alpha is good for 300hp but if yours is not new it will not last very long you can upgrade that aswell but that is more $$

So according to the formula it is only a 2 mph increase for 20 hp? Seems like a lot of work for 2 mph. I am going to start looking for a 350 to throw together
