Sorry to hear about the motor mount. I was going to say just replace the mount and be on your way but we all know what happens as soon as you dig into it, one thing leads to another and full resto. I think you should cut the mount out and see where it leads, maybe it will be just a quick mount replacement before you give up on it. You never know.

LOL- it does have all the amenities of home :D Humm wonder if I can substitute the stove alcohol with Jack Daniels, dual purpose fuel lol

Hey Vert, I'm going to cut out the motor mount today and see what I find. One thing I did notice is the the engine must have been out before, the bilge has been completely painted, and yes I have flaking paint. There is no way it could have been painted the way it was without getting it on the oil pan.

Picked up the engine last night, this weekend I'm going to start cleaning it up and checking everything. This is where I have to be real careful because I have a tendency to get carried away. I don't want to wind up with a racing Cruiser  . The first thing that has to go is the cam and intake, right now it has a Torker manifold 2500-6500 rpm range, I'm thinking the Performer idle- 5500 is better suited. For the cam I think I am going to go with Competition Cams Extreme Marine here is a link to the specs Its a mild roller 1200-5200 RPM

The one thing that worries me is that it will be to much engine for the boat,
it is a heavy boat so that does help some

Beta you have the same boat, my tag is washed out. Do you remember or can you tell me what yours says for max HP ?

Do you know what heads are on the new motor? That will have a lot to do with intake and cam selection. Did you call comp, they have an excellent tech department and will help you if you give them all your specs for the new motor.

As I was reading what you wrote I was thinking shoot he's right lol. My pal thinks their the large port Bowtie Vortec from what he remembers. I didn't order anything for it yet, I am stripping it this weekend I will check the casting #'s .
I'm terrible though, I looked at the engine I pulled out of the boat, looks like it was a fresh motor, block is freshly painted, and I see RTV Black on the pan gasket, intake etc... I thought to myself do the crank and put the 383 in my wrangler :D lol

I am real bad with this kinda like an alcoholic stuff put me back in my old circle and I tend to go on a bender. I am already arguing with myself, trying not to give into temptation and bring the heads and rotating assembly to Sandoval in Bklyn to do the balance work and re-work the heads. At the rate I'm going I'll be back racing dirt track in no time  There goes the farm lol

Right now I'm moving all my files to my New Basement Office :( if I have time latter I am going to start stripping the old one and see what let loose

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Well I picked up the donated engine on Sunday
IMG00219.jpg

I have my work cut out for me, the person I thought had built it, didn't :( The engine was out of a Nova that our other friend had purchased complete. He has passed on so there was no way of getting the history. With that I stripped it down yesterday here is what I found:
1) it has TRW L2256 pistons Std not .030 over, those are standard 350 pistons with the pin boss in its standard location. Must be a 5.565 rod
2)400 balancer and flexplate
3)Looks like Forged Crank, but can't find manufactures name or casting # has 350 mains looked up the bearing #'s it had 350 CL77's. On top of that it looks like its been balanced,I see crank + rod work was done.
4) Engine looks pretty fresh, no cylinder ridge and can still see the cross hatch pistons etc look new
5) Heads are 882 castings, 76cc, 1.94 valves. Although they have been match ported to the intake and I see some additional port work done I might swap them for a set of darts. These are light weight heads with known cracking problems. The 76cc chamber with that piston gives a theoretical 8.9:1cr, if I go to 72cc dart I will be up around 9.5:1 with the right head gasket.
Before I start throwing money at it here is my plan of attack:
1) CC the original heads, and check the mil angle if any.
2) check piston to wall clearance
3) put the crank and 1 slug back in and check deck clearance with my dial indicator, + verify 3.75 stroke.
4) mic up crank
IF all is good:
1) drop block off have it hot tanked, brass freeze-outs, light hone, cam bearings
2) new bearings,cam,rings
3) find 400 flywheel seeing it was out of an automatic

Lol painting is the last thing I do, im arguing with myself AGAIN Cheby orange or black, black is better for heat dissipation but I like being different lol

Sure come on over, us 2 nuts wrenching on the engine would be cool, whats a few miles when it comes to friends lol :D
The removal was rough, and I stripped down the engine yesterday in the back of my box truck while it was raining cats and dogs here. I'm actually going to be building the engine in my basement I like controlled environments for that, I have a nice engine stand, catch pan for under her, my roll-away and a fridge for my pal Bud Weiser lol . I have already dug out and dusted off my dial indicator, degree wheel and micrometers in preparation
Now on my way back from an estimate today I dropped off the block to be checked, hot tanked etc... I started picking cams tonight below are pics of what I am looking at. I am going to try to keep it to a 9:1cr (compression Ratio.) if I go to 10:1 fuel might become an issue and its only an 18 hp difference, its 438hp with 454lbs torque with the 9:1 and a set of 72cc dart heads . 64 cc darts would give me the 10:1cr but then I would have to run 92 octane so I don't detonate
boatcam1018.jpg

Any opinions or thoughts, anyone think its to much for the 22' cruiser, should I just go to an old fashioned hydraulic cam which will save me $400 but I loose 40 horse. or should I Tim Allan this one More Power, More Power lol :D

HVAC Cruiser,
Nice score on the motor.
For my two cents worth, The real question is do you need or want the 40 extra HP.
The 400 bucks could buy some other cool stuff.
Good luck on the decision. :D

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hey Bob, Im taking your advice, and not going crazy with the engine. After going over the budget and having to upgrade to a bravo drive if I ran a over 400 hp engine the money started getting up there.

Well the weather was mild today 36 out with a real feel temp of 25, so I decided to go outside and work on the boat :D I have one engine perch that appeared to be rotten so I ground it out
IMG00284.jpg

The stringer itself wasn't that bad I got it out in one piece
IMG00287.jpg

The core of the hull seems sound underneath, I double checked the transom especially inside the stern drives keyhole appears solid.

Now for the questions
, the original was a piece of 6x6 dimensional lumber stringer with 3/4 ply stacked flat at the motor mount perch area. Should I make it the same way or should I make it like a typical stringer ply on edge 6x6 then stack flat on top of that to ensure the motor mount bolts grip. The entire stringer is not that long maybe 3' at best but its also one of the main transom braces.

Any Thoughts?

HVAC Cruiser,
I think you made a wise choice on the motor.
For the motor mounts mine was dimensional lumber with a layer of ply on top of it too.
I found some engineered lumber that was 15 ply's thick. about 2" X 12".
I riped it in half and plan to use it for my mounts.
Keep the pic's coming.

Hey Bob I looked at your carpentry work on your photobucket link very very nice work.
Thanks for the input
Ironically after I read your post my pal Charlie called I asked him if he still had the leftover microlam stubs from rebuilding his house which he does :D I think I'll copy your Idea.:)

Hahaha don't jinx me lol
I was actually worried about the hull being rotten under the stringer and the transom where it connects BUT I don't know if the factory did it or it was a repair, the hull and the transom were both glassed completely prior to the stringer being installed :D It looks like someone added a new layer of fiberglass about 1/8" thick in the bilge area but the new layer also de-laminated in areas. I am trying to figure out if its poly or epoxy it doesn't look green it looks clear for the most part. this is the bad thing about not knowing the history

By the way, I did find out what toasted the engine and its a shame because it looks like it was a fresh engine. The exhaust elbow off the manifold on the starboard side only had 3 of the 4 nuts on it leaked through the gasket and water poured right into the engine  That's kinda like a "look ma no brains" routine. The elbow looks shot so now I am trying to decide if I should just buy new elbows or spring for the $388 and get the GLM 4" complete manifold kit. I am leaning towards the kit I don't want to take any chances with the new engine

I know, I was reading your thread this morning.your moving right along with your project, its looking good. Junking yours would be heartbreaking, if I lived closer I'd buy it from you. I love this boat, the lines of the hull took awhile for me to get used to it looked stubby at 1st but its grown on me I like the extra cabin room .
If you are forced to scrap it let me know I'll buy whatever parts that can be shipped from you starting with the starboard vent window (I lost it in transport :( )
Did you ever get to check the max hp on the sticker?

No Such thing as JINX is there Bill? lol

true story....I looked at a FORD f150 4x4 couple weeks ago when I was looking for a truck......guy had it parked at his brother in laws house.bigger property etc.....we looked at it...and decided it needed too many repairs...well he asked if we'd drive it over to his house for him (he ended up living right near us) well so He lives on the corner, small lot etc...it has leaks so I pull it in frt of his house...he has me pull up to just past the stop sign, I get out and tell him, "ya know ya might catch a ticket parking it here...mebbe want to put it across the street?" he says "no, its fine there, I parked it there for 9 months before and didnt have any issues. " next day......he calls em "uh...I got a ticket for parking too close top the corner"

JINX?????? sheet ya!

Bill, did it bend a rod or sumthin? (that bunk boat motor)

PS Bill I am so used to the HIJACK zone I almost let this post go on for 2 hours...cut and pasted it to the hijack zone...lol rock on!
