Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Thanks Paul,

I still have to hem the top and I am going to add sides because as you will see in what I am about to post I probably will be using her till December when fishing closes around here so I can get some enjoyment out of her.
Got to run an errand, I will post in a few

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...................................
Here is my story

Yep She is getting pulled again  The best I can figure, with the old carb on I leaned out and detonated, breaking the ring land.

Well the stops are now out, I am going punch it out, deck it and put a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads on her.

After I am finished I think I am going to rent some Dyno time for her to make sure everything is ok and see what the actual HP and torque is. I feel if its going to blow up let it happen on the stand. I don't want to have to pull it again ;)

man....at least your weather is turning and it wont be the height of the season..

Bummer..that pre detenation is like a frag grenade just waiting to blow..

But the inner gearhead in you is looking forward to building her yourself, without some idiot telling you "it's fine"

Hey Kev,

Hate to say it but I built her myself last time too. I did my due diligence BUT I just listened to others instead of myself cause they were saying what I wanted to hear:( .

The Naw the pistions... are fine, no worries etc... I thought was saving me money . Oops I should have listened to the voices in my head instead.

In the end, I was the idiot for listening :( this will keep me out of the water 2-3 weeks. I might have to move by you so I can take her on the water when she is done lol

Even a forged piston will come apart with detonation. Ask me how I know. I will agree they are stronger but cast should have been fine under 6000 rpm and under 500hp. I think it was just a lean out that got you. I have a much worse pic of a 455 piston that I took out years ago with a 250 shot on my Sidewinder. It stinks but this is life. I hope the next build will be bullet proof and you will never have to see that thing apart again.

Man that sucks! Hours working on the boat is far greater than hours of enjoyment. I am thinking by now I could blindfold you and give you a good leatherman and you could take the engine out and rebuild it in about 6 beers?

Hang two outboards on that puppy and be done! Inboard outboards they only made two types. You know what two types the made correct?

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hi everyone,

Well I haven't done much work on her. I pulled the engine last week and tore it down. Here is what the #1 piston looked like
100_2425.jpg

I did order $600 in parts on sunday here is what I ordered so far

Speed Pro +12cc dish pistons 30 over
Speed Pro Moly Rings
Scat 5.7 Procomp rods with 7/16 rod bolts
Clevite CL77 rod and main bearings
Gasket Set
For tools I ordered a new 4.030 sleeve ring compressor.

I am arguing with myself over who I want to do the blocks machine work. I think I am going to have jack merkle do it he is $150 more than others BUT I know it will be done right.

I didn't order the heads yet I am going with the Edelbrock E-Street Aluminum being that I have closed cooling.

I have been playing around with compression ratios, head gasket thickness cyl volume etc.. Comp cams said for this cam I want to be between 9:1-10:1. If I use a 70cc head with a .039 gasket and deck the block to .005 I wind up with a 9.54:1 which I think would be perfect. I get the 9.5CR I want and still have .043 piston to head clearanceto keep it halfway safe.

Call me crazy but I am playing with the idea that once its finished I might drop it in my jeep or pick up a chevy PU truck to put it in for the winter to break her in :D;):D

LOL, The heads aren't shot they need a valve job though. I do need the valve springs from them cause they match my cam. The heads are 76cc , depending on your setup depends if you can use them. Call me on my cell and let me know what your thinking.
