I am buying next week from a friend a Yamaha 15 4 stroke that was new 5 years ago -- was run ONCE for an hour 5 years ago (for an hour) and ONLY one other time 2 years ago for 30 minutes( the second time by me) I plan on using a new tank, line and gas. Do I need to worry about changing the oil or the water pump or the lower unit oil or anything else before taking out on the lake?

Re: Yamaha 15 4 stroke

It's 1 quart of oil, and a few ounces of gear lube on an otherwise brand new engine. If it was mine, I would change it just to make sure, then follow the owners manual and do a complete breakin on your NEW motor.
After 5 years, I would replace the raw water pump impeller too. Just to be sure.

I am with DonS.
at a MINIMUM change the water pump they do fail just by sitting.
your most likly gonna clean the carb as well.
engine oil and gear case oil? its just to cheap not to do it.
overheat that motor once and its possible to turn it into 18 cents per pound.

Thanks much-- ( got it today) wonder how much all that would be at average yamaha dealer/shop -- less than $200 or more Thanks

beats me, takes about an hour to change the water pump and the kit is about 40 dollars.
takes about an hour to clean the carb cost will depend on what in the carb needs replacing,if anything.

I have the same motor mine is I think (not sure how to check) a 2005 was told an 06 when I got it , and the dealer said 300 bucks to clean carbs change water pump and impeller and change all fluids.

I did it myself for less than 50 bucks with iboats help of course.
