Re: Has this ever happend to you (starting questions)

I re-read the diagram (SELOC 10-84)

Well, there is most of your problem, You have a BY model. If you go up to the Adults Only sticky and go to the Volvo info section, you can download the OEM manuals for your engine and drive. They are SOOOOOOO much better.
Then you can use your Seloc as an expensive knee pad as it was designed.

One note, the nice clear wiring diagram came from the EF model, but I knew they were all the same in that time frame. I checked.

Now a question. Why have to different power sources to the coil, one in the start mode, one in the run mode if there is no voltage reduction to the coil in run mode?.
In case there is low voltage/amperage from the ignition switch due to corrosion and the long wire runs.
It works, but volvo abandoned that wire in the newer models.

Lots of post while I was doing my one finger typing. Think it time to step aside. FRED

yeah, and as I was working on it tonight, my jeans got soaked. I could have used those knee pads to lessen my strain, lol...
I'll check out the OEM manual.

Thanx, DON... I'm a Jet engine mechanic for the Navy. If you ever have an Jet question, don't hesitate to ask.
I'm just trying to pay you back for all the help you're giving me.

Not necessary, besides, I have people to take care of my jet

Re: Has this ever happend to you (starting questions)

OK... Update.. I got a jumper and jumped the purple wire. It ran like a charm. I was actually impressed, because it sat for about 4 or 5 months, and it started damn near right up..

And when I disconnected the purple wire, it stopped, immediately. So, am I right to assume that the problem is between the ignition switch and the starter (in the purple wire)? Should I just put a hot on/off switch and just do it that way? or should I just replace the purple wire?

Anything else I should do???

No, it's not time to start running new wires and half azzing things, now we start looking for the problem.
Without starting the engine, turn the key to run and with your meters black wire on a good ground, check at the purple wire on the ignition switch and see if you have the same voltage as the big red wire on the ign. switch.

you're looking for relatively 12 volts on each one, right?

Yes, but just post the reading from the red and the purple wire.

Re: Has this ever happend to you (starting questions)

OK Don.. I did what you said...

With the ignition on OFF, the switch read 0 Volts on both the red, and the purple. With it on RUN, it was 12.54 for both.

I also traced the wire all the way back, and it didn't look like anything happened to it (no cuts, frays)...
But here's something interesting. I read wire on the starter (as per the diagram in your first post to me), and it read 0.00. That we know is the problem, so I didn't sweat it... I accidentally hooked the black terminal to the POSITIVE instead of the negative, and it read 12.54 volts. I kept on reading and reading, but it showed the purple wire is a negative... I read the purple wire coming out of the junction box, and that, too, was a negative.

Am I misreading things? I thought that that wire was supposed to be charged and hot when the key was on the "on" position.

I just wanted to give you as much info as I can, so maybe trouble shooting would be easier.
Thanx again..

Where did you have the red and black from the meter hooked when you did that test?

Opps, sorry DON... The red read 12, the purple read 0 while in off. Both read 12 while in the "run" position...

My mistake..

That's better.
Now, go back to the engine, turn the key switch to on (engine not running) with the meters black to a good ground, check the purple wire on the small terminal on the starter. You should see about the same voltage as you did at the key switch.

Re: Has this ever happend to you (starting questions)

Nope. I did that like, 10 times (I don't know why, I didn't expect a different result).. It reads 0.0 VOLTS, but when I accidentally hooked up the black terminal of my multimeter to the positive of the battery (instead of the negative) I read -12.54 volts. I tried it again, and it showed basically, that the purple wire was a ground, not a lead.

Isn't that weird? I also read the purple wire on the junction box, and it was a ground, too...

Do you have an emergency kill switch (the one with a lanyard) on your boat?

Re: Has this ever happend to you (starting questions)

Disconnect the wires from that switch, and hook them together. (not the wires on the switch, the ones from the harness)
Bet you get voltage and it will run now.

Sorry, DON, you lost me.

Which ones am I to disconnect and and hook together... I see where you're going, since we know the engine is good, and it runs, because the jumper made the engine run (and run great, at that).

So, which wires do I hook together to make it run (using only the key)??

Bypass the kill switch.

I figured you'd say that... So, I went to where the boat is parked, and I bypassed the kill-switch, still the exact same problem.

Is this getting weird yet?
