Can automotive fuel line be substituted for marine fuel line? My local evinrude shop is closed...but the auto stores are always open!

Re: Automotive vs. Marine Fuel line?

What I have always been told is marine fuel line is made to be more flexible than automotive line due to the fact the motor twist and the line has to move with it. That said some auto parts stores carry marine fuel line. If not Wal-Mart and K-Mart carry them.

Huh. I always thought fuel line was fuel line!

Well...I hope "fuel line is fuel line" because I just bought five feet of the stuff from my local auto parts store. I'll keep it on the motor until someone tells me different.

Has to do with flex otherwise same as far as fuel delivery ability.

"Flex" as in tight radius turns or elasticity?

Tight radius turns, pick up regular fuel line and marine type, the marine will coil tighter without collapsing, regular is more "rigid" by design.

I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks,

Re: Automotive vs. Marine Fuel line?

The lines used with a fuel tank (filler, vent and supply) are supposed to meet USCG specs, but I don't think that applies to the internal lines on an outboard. That said, outboard manufacturers tend to follow ABYC standards, which are supposedly as tough as the USCG standards.

I think you can use automotive type fuel lines, but I would use USCG approved, when available.

On the motor itself, I use whatever is available. Outside of the motor, particularly enclosed under a deck, use the correctly rated marine fuel line.
This is based on the old Johnson/Evinrudes that I have. I don't have anything newer than a 1970.

Me too , typically the marine stuff is "from" the motor to the tank, the stuff inside is just plain old fuel line on all my motors.

Re: Automotive vs. Marine Fuel line?

Well, sounds like I'm good...since I'm just replacing lines to the carb.

Yes, you should be fine. What I was refering to the flexiability applies on the outside where the motor pivots and the line has to move with it.

Re: Automotive vs. Marine Fuel line?

replaced all mine EXCEPT the ultra small lines going from the primer solinoid to the carbs and such. I cant find that stuff anywhere. Well i have not checked with my local evinrude parts supplier( dont like to do business there since he tried to sell me some old type fuel line which was not good for ethanol). I guess I have to go see him. Any other thoughts. That stuff is like 1/8 i.d. mabye smaller?

Auto stores sell two grades, the "regular" stuff and the high pressure stuff for fuel injection cars. The regular stuff is fine for outboards. Unless it is fuel injected, I supose. Don't know anything about them.

Try a small engine shop, the primer line on tecumseh's and weedeaters is the same size.

0321610 1/8" ID hose: that hose has been superseded by part # 0772570, ordered by the foot.

The 1/16" ID hose is part # 0772568, also sold by the foot.

Re: Automotive vs. Marine Fuel line?

Here's what I've found. I have both under the cowl on my engine with no problems. The automotive stuff you get from local auto parts works but is thinner and easily flexed which could kink and collapse in certain tight places. The marine fuel line I was using, before I ran out and used the auto parts stuff, has a thicker wall on it and is more rigid to allow flexing without kinking up. As mentioned by trust worthy sources already, I'd use the marine stuff if running below deck.

uscg approved fuel line is required in closed spaces, such as built in fuel tanks. once in open air. regular line is fine.

The line I bought specifically says, "Not for fuel injection!" imprinted on the line...so I guess I got the cheap stuff. But no worries, my fuel pump is not high pressure....let alone a fuel injected motor.
