What are these controls on my 1984 Johnson 4HP Sea Horse?

I recently bought a 1984 Johnson 4Hp Sea Horse but do not know what the controls are for (and cannot ask the previous owner as he has moved). They are quite different from my old 1973 Johnson 4HP.

Control A (see pic) is clearly the fuel on/off and choke. Control B (marked like a volume control) seems to be the throttle but then I thought this was C on the tiller which twists. And right on the end of the tiller is control D which twists a littleand is marked "adjust" - there also appears to be a button on the very end of the tiller (cut-out??).

I would be very grateful if anyone can enlighten me.

A is choke which also controls fuel shutoff valve at the bottom of the carb, B is idle fuel mix, C is your throttle and D is slow idle speed control.

A is the combined fuel tap and choke. Turns to operate the fuel tap, pulls to operate the choke.

B is the idle speed mixture. If the carb is set up correctly it should just be left in the mid point of its range.

C is the throttle control. Markings (may not be very accurate) indicate the position for gear shifting and the position for starting

D is the idle speed but it's sort of limiter on the turning of the twist grip not an independent control. It turns quite a lot but goes in "clicks"

Stop button on the end of the tiller

The flat headed thing just above the grease nipple on the clamp bracket is the tilt lock. Turn one way (half turn) locks it. Other way releases it.

BTW the carrying handle looks like metal but is only plastic. The last one in the Belgium stores is on its way to me!

I think you will find its a deluxe model, same twist grip as the 6 hp and full cowling. FNR gears too. Got an '84 brochure here.

(got an '84 6 hp too)

It is the deluxe model in 86, OMC didnt have that style throttle control in 84, 2 models in 84 didnt have the kill switch at the end of the twist grip.

Actually according to the parts manual, the throttle control in 84 was off the magneto.

the "D" adjustment on the end of the handle does exactly what? ive played with it all the way in and out but cant say that i have noticed much. how would be the best way to adjust it. ie. what does all the way in do vs all the way out?

Its to fine adjust trolling speed, it will only increase and decrease speed at trolling.

Parts manual does not show the Deluxe model for 1984 but often does not show Belgium built models which this one may be

The 1984 brochure I have says :
New this year is our model 4 deluxe. It takes all the well known features of our long established Model 4 and adds a full Forward-Neutral-Reverse gearshift, Firepower CD electronic ignition, and a new integrated control tiller handle with twist-grip throttle. The Model 4 Deluxe: for the man who takes his pleasure seriously.

Perhaps made in Belgium for the UK/ European market with the US playing catch up 2 years later.

So deluxe model as described first made in 1984 !

Just noticed. OP's picture shows engine in Evinrude colour but with Johnson cover. A Johnson from that era would have been all white wouldn't it?

It adjusts the lower limit of travel of the twist grip throttle. Close the throttle, turn the knob anticlockwise and you will be able to close the throttle just a little tiny bit more.
Open the throttle a bit turn the knob clockwise then you will find that you cannot close the throttle quite as far as you could previously.

Its a very fine adjustment and not obvious unless you have the motor running.

Just experiment, Get it set to the position where the minimum throttle setting gives you the idle speed you want.

That could be, seems Europe gets everything 2 years prior to N/A, I was going by the N/A parts list. And yes, all white is correct, grey usually indicated a commercial model or Belgium made.

You'd expect that wouldn't you? UK and Europe was discovered long before N. America. :D

I've been shopping for just such an outboard (4HP with tiller throttle)--what's the weight of this motor?

Re: What are these controls on my 1984 Johnson 4HP Sea Horse?

From the 1984 brochure

with integral fuel tank std/long 15.5kg/16.4kg, deluxe models 23.4k/24.5kg

without integral tank std/long 15.1kg/16.0kg, deluxe models 22.7kg/23.8kg

Deluxe models (fnr shift, tiller throttle etc) as you can see are very much heavier.
