My outboard 1985 evinrude 115 starts up great 90% of the time. 10% of the time it takes 3-10min of motoring to get it started. Runs great 90% of the time 10% of the time it acts like its running rich, bogging down then it will just run like a top any body have any helpful info

Thanks Matthew

Many times that is caused by water in the fuel. Do you have water separating fuel filter installed?

I agree sounds like bad fuel, or possibly a coil/power pack going in and out. I recommend making sure water is not getting into fuel and then new Champion plugs, also check plug wires, those cowls are know to hook the plug/coil wires, crappy design if you ask me, have to be so careful when installing the cowl on OMC V-4s

it's coils, and power packs, not coil packs.

No real good way to check power pack that I know of (just replaced my power pack myself). There are plenty of articles online here to check if coils are good just do a quick search.

If the power pack goes out and your coils are old, you might as well change the coils too because theyll probably go out soon as well.

Re: evinrude 115hp starting and runing problems

When the engine starts to run badly, the ignition system could be dropping a cylinder. If you have an inductive timing light handy at that exact time, put it on each of the 4 plug wires and look at the flashes from the light. You will be able to see weak spark and misfires. That engine has two power packs, one for each head. You can swap them to further verify spark capability and they can be replaced individually.
