Timing Shaft

i have a 1998 I/O mercruiser 350 magnum. i removed the timing shaft without marking its location. I am now putting it back together and need a little help on where/how to start.

Timing shaft? Do you mean the cam shaft, the distributor or harmonic balancer?

Set no 1 piston to top dead center on the compression stroke and put the rotor button pointing to no 1 spark plug lead on the dizzy cap, turn it back about 20mm as it has a helical gear at the bottom of the dizzy, once its fully installed make sure the distributor rotor is pointing to no 1 spark plug lead on the dizzy cap, also ensure you can turn the distributor comfortably either way to adjust timing. should start now

Yes, don't put the dizzy in till you have TDC on the compression stroke
