I donated my 1993 18' bowrider to a charity. They sold it for $1500 and was able to deduct that amount of my 2009 taxes. No hassles. Call charity, they pick it up, give you a receipt and when it sold they sent me the tax form.

Craigs list.... I tried to sell a engine on there. Had all sorts of goofy responses.. The best one was... can you put it on my boat for me, I need to test drive it.

In California we don't register motors and possession is 9/10ths of the law.

I had all the usual no shows that wasted my Saturday's and such.

My solution... Ebay... sold it in a week. Buyer put cash in my Paypal account. I crated it and he arranged the shipping. Three days later it was on a truck headed for Florida.

The difference is on eBay, if you don't have the cash and can't commit you don't get to play. This reduces the stupid factor significantly.

In Bryan's case I would have put it up for .99 and made it local pickup only or do just what he's doing now and cut it up.

On eBay, AS IS is a legal term.

I had a 15-foot hull at the curb with a sign, "Free to a good home." A week went by with no takers.

On a neighbor's suggestion I changed the sign to add a bit of value: "Boat hull for sale -- $25."

That night someone stole it.

I always said, if you really want to get rid of junk put it at the curb, out where no lights are and put a rediculous priced sign on it...

someone will steal it thinking they got something of value!!

put free on it..and it will sit there for ages.

I really like the one I saw a few days ago. It was a boat listed on CL for $1000
it even had pictures and in the first picture you can clearly see a sign on the windshield that sez FOR SALE $850.

I put a junk boat on CL and had 30 emails the next morning. I told everyone, the first one here gets it. I was not going to worry about it.

Ebay has morons too. Friend of mine sold his car three times, nobody paid, but ebay still wanted their fees. After some b!thching and moaning on his part, ebay waived the fees for the first sale, but he had to eat the costs for the last two. Maybe they changed their policies, that was a couple of years ago.

I had a 1998 Saab in really good shape with 200K on it (was my commuter). The engine started to knock at 190K so I found a low mileage engine and put it in.

I listed it for sale a few months later at $1500, which was really really cheap. I said it had a low mile engine in it and was ready to go. I didnt get a single call!

I took the Ad down, waited a week, listed it as a 200,000+ mile car and raised the price to $2500 and it sold in 2 days. I never did mention that the engine had low miles.

Go figure!
