So they just had on the news how since the cold winter was so bad all the manatees were bunched up in hot spots around the state.

The last official number was something like 1,200 or 1,500 in the state.

Counted over 5,000

Do you think they will lift some of these useless speed zones?

No way they are really only there so you don't go fast by rich peoples houses.

Idle in the channel but go off to the side and run what you brung baby, makes no sense unless manatees stay in the channel anyway.

Nope, they won't lift a thing. Just don't hit one, even if far away from a manatee zone, and if you do don't try to be a nice, responsible guy and tell the authorities. You'll get treated like a criminal for trying to do the right thing. (personal experience)....

Well they ARE an ENDANGERED SPECIES and deserve all the protection we can give them.

Some things are just more important than speed.

Just thinking out loud.

How do those thing taste? Can you pick them up like road kill?

Yeah...if you carry a crane on board...:p

They probably taste like elephant meat..

As far as the OP, they are a nuisance, but it is the law....I just don't find myself fishing much in the areas they are located, so I really don't have to deal with them much. I do know several times a year we go to the river mouths where they congregate and watch them frolic around. It's a great thing for the kids to see...kids of all ages.

Taste like chicken. :D :D :D

Big pole. Shark hook. Head of Lettuce. Hell of a fight!
Then a chain saw, 600 eggs and 100 pounds of cornmeal.
Lightly dredge using a pitchfork and fry in a vat of oil
Feeds 500.
Hey, aren't there manatees near the Fla get-together this year ??

Re: Manatee zones!

I'm not quite sure what exactly you think that answers.

Manatees are from the west indies where they are thriving and are a nuisance.

The problem is that they migrate during the summer as far as Rhode Island and instead of continuing south when it gets cold they hang out near water discharges to power plants. Which is why 200 already died this year.

The so called florida population, because the only way to count them is when they huddle up in these spots in Florida, should have been changed to threatened years ago and would be off that list with the new numbers.

But the system to classify them requires another 14 years before they can establish what the number should be.

This at a cost of $10,000,000 to tax payers.

Present gov't stats state boats only cause 37% of deaths and since there have already been such a large number that froze this year that % is going to be way lower this year.

Of course these new numbers still don't include the ones that did swim farther south in the state where it was not as cold because they just where not nice enough to huddle up together so the could be counted.

Please do not misunderstand me I don't want anybody to harm them, but the fact of the matter is a lot of these zones make zero sense. Sure there are spots where they should be in place, but I'm sorry manatees don't pay attention to markers.

Re: Manatee zones!

I'm pretty sure they don't taste very good, or else they would probably be near extinction. I don't mind the manatee slow speed zones. I'm out for the relaxation of boating not just the destination.

Now this will surely excite some. Don't you think that the guy who bought that expensive house on the water near the slow speed zone is entitled to enjoy the peace and quiet for which he paid? Relax, enjoy life and allow others to do the same. :)

OH, and yes, I lived and boated in Florida for many years.
