Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Sounds logical. I will see if I can hunt down the fuse panel later. I have spent quite a bit if time in the boat now and don't recall seeing it. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

On my 87 I found no fuse panel. I found three fuses in line in the wire cluster. one at the dash switch, one at the throttle control, and one on the red hot wire feeding the tilt motor. Yours should be the same i suspect. Hope this helps.

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Tell me more about the antifreeze.

It's chartreuse colored stuff that comes in a bottle from your local car dealer, and tastes really good to dogs, but will kill them. But that's not important right now.

It contains polyethlene glycol, which is the active ingredient and also the poisonous one. Note that this is different from the biodegradable antifreeze for boats, it's car anti freeze.

Soaking rotten wood in it will halt the rot until the PG leaches out.. the stuff is poisonous to fungus and bacteria as well as dogs and people.

Eventually it will leach out and the wood will start to rot again, it also adds weight a little (wet wood is heavier than dry) and it doesn't spread itself out, it won't migrate from one spot to fill your transom.

But as a quick fix to slow right it *might* help some.

Thanks for the info on the antifreeze. The rotten part of my transom is wet, so I am guessing the antifreeze would not work.

LR - Thanks for the info on the fuses. I checked the tilt motor fuse and it was fine. However, when I was checking that fuse, I noticed the tilt motor ground was loose. Tightened it up and it works great now.

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - topside paint for entire boat?

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - topside paint for entire boat?

I will be buying the paint soon.

I am going to use Interlux Brightside for the colored stripe, but what should I use for the white on the rest of the hull. The white part will be both above and below the water line. Can I use topside for the entire boat or do I need antifouling or bottom coat? Except for a few days a year, the boat is stored out of the water.

You can use topsides for the whole boat.

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - Flotation Foam?

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - Flotation Foam?

OK. I am getting closer. I have torn up the seats and most of the floor. Everything from the ski locker back is wet and/or rotten. As I have read elsewhere, the stringers are only 1/2" plywood. I am not sure that they are large enough to be considered structural. I guess they are there to hold up the deck and keep the gas tank from moving?

I am going to replace the stringers with either Doug Fir 2X6s or 2 pieces 1/2" ply (resined together).

Deck will be 1/2" ply glassed/resined.

My question is -- do I need to replace all the foam I am digging out? If so, what should I use? I am on a tight budget.

I am using the 3/4" pink foam from Lowes. It's a lot of cutting to fit the areas but it is working out well. I hold it in place with tabs of PL. This foam will not absorb water so I think it's a good choice. As far as do you need to replace. I think on a safety standpoint foam should be in the boat. I would rather have it in and never need it (the plan) than need it and not have it (bad).

We are in the same boat as far as your stringer question concerning 1/2" stringers. Don't be afraid of a good grade of 1/2" exterior, well cut, sealed in Poly, and bedded with PL. It,s a good and very strong assembly once all of it is glassed. There are lots of post here discussing this issue and how to do it. I first thought that the 1/2" was questionable but I have one stringer done as a test and It's very strong. I will trust it on the water. Hope this helps and read these post on stringers. there is a lot of great advice and how to.

Thanks LR. Is that the INSULPINK from Owens Corning? I found it on-line, but not on either Home Depot or Lowes web sites.

I think you are right on the stringers. If 1/2" was good enough to last 24 years, it is probably good enough to put back in the boat.

ezmobee -- I have heard about the noodles. I just read about a guy filling the space with sealed plastic bottles. He claims they are lighter than foam and will create more bouyancy.

The 4x8 sheets of pink. I think it's DOW. Comes 1/2" and 3/4" also in blue which is Dow at Home Depot 1/2" and 3/4". I am using pink because I got a lot at a great price (Free) from one of my contruction sites. I believe that the specs are the same blue or pink.

Sea Ray - Can't find Pink or Blue Foam in San Diego

Sea Ray - Can't find Pink or Blue Foam in San Diego

OK. I am sold on the pink or blue foam sheet idea, but can't find it anywhere here in San Diego. I have tried Home Depot, Lowes, even Dow and Owens Corning. Owens Corning will ship me some, but only if I want 2 pallets. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You might check with local construction companies and see if they use it and have any on hand. If HD and Lowes don't carry it then the construction folks would have to order it and keep it warehoused. Just a thought.

I have checked with all the wholesale construction supply companies. It is a regional thing, I guess. The stuff is made to insulate basements and there are no basements in the southwest.

Found the blue stuff in 1" and 1.5" at an insulation supply company -- $12 per sheet.

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - what kind of wood for stringers?

1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration - what kind of wood for stringers?

OK, just about ready for the wood -- going to buy it this weekend.

For the stringers -- I was going to use either 1X6 or 2X6. Can I use regular doug fir or do I need to get the kiln dried stuff? (OEM was 1/2' plywood with a 2X2 attached at the top)

For the deck -- I was going to get exterior grade 15/32 plywood (resin all sides and glass the top).

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

go ahead and use plywood for the stringers as well, the plywood is dried and the 1x6 or 2x6 may still have moisture in them, plus they are not as strong as plywood. good luck and keep us posted.....tink
