Just had my mariner outboard fixed and it starts up great from the ignition switch. when I turn the key off it will not shut down. I have to choke it out to stop it. Tested continuity from black/yellow wire to black and had continuity. when I flip the key to run position it maintains the continuity from black/yellow to black. I will be testing continuity in all key position and all wires and will post. Any ideas to start with. The mechanic that replaced a bunch of parts said he is 100% sure that it is not in the back at the engine. I couldnt afford to pay him anymore to check the ignition problem. ANy suggestions.

New parts
Rectifier
Solenoid
Regulator+wire
Merc Switch
Stator
Solenoid Cap
Wire Harness
Impeller
outer switch box

Also, is there an easier way to shut the motor down without having to remove the air box and choke it out? If I tilt the motor up should it kill the motor?

The tilt kill uses the same circuit as the key switch. The switch is supposed to short that black/yellow wire to ground when you turn it off. It connects to both switchboxes, and the tilt switch, and any kill lanyard switch you have.

It connects to the second screw from the left along the top of both switchboxes. The circuit goes through pin 1 of the cannon plug.

Eyeball the wires on the switchboxes. Then start it on the cuffs and connect a jumper from a good ground to either of those 2 screws. It should stop. Troubleshoot the harness from there.

Be sure the ground straps are good on the switchboxes.

hope it helps

Re: 1987 V200 wont shut off

I jumper the black/ yellow wire on the switchbox to ground and it shut off. So far everything up as far as ignition switch lanyard switch and instruments all check out. I checked continuity from the black/ yellow on the switch connector to the harness plug number 8 pin back on the motor and got no continuity. So somewhere in between Im losing it. but its all enclosed in the harness except the tilt module wire. ill have to splice that and check it. There are 3 black/ yellow wires coming out of the harness on the engine. 2 go to the switch boxes and one goes to a part that is on a 45 degree angle. continuity across that is infinite in switch positions. Is that normal. what is it? Thanks

The 45 degree part is a mercury switch that should kill the ignition if the motor is tilted up.

Check the cannon plug. It might not be fully seated or dirty, or is defective. (the new harness)

Like I said, the function of the kill circuit, be it ignition switch, safety kill switch, or mercury switch, is to ground the black/yellow wire, thus disabling the ignition.

Both the kill circuit and the ground return go through the cannon plug.

hope it helps

Sounds like the mercury switch that closes when the engine is tilted up. If it's bad it won't affect shutting the engine off. Two/black yellow wires should trace back to the switch boxes (one on each, second terminal in from the left). A third black yellow should trace back to pin 7 of the harness plug. They are usually all tied together on a terminal block near the mercury switch. If you put a ohmmeter on the black/yellow you should read open when the key is in the run position and grounded when the key is off.

Will the motor still run in neutral when tilted up or just in gear? Is the Canon plug what plugs into the engine harness to connect the boat wiring harness to the engine wiring harness?

If it's tilted up to the point where the mercury in the switch moves and touches the contacts on both ends of the switch, the black/yellow wire will become shorted to ground and the engine will stop. It does not matter if it's in neutral, forward or reverse.

The boat wiring harness has a male cannon plug and it plugs into the female end at the electrical plate on the engine. The plug is located just below the starter.

As a side note, if you're testing these items with the engine running, watch out for that black/yellow wire, it'll bite you.

Ok problem solved. the yellow black wire was bad somewhere within a 2 foot stretch of sealed wire harness in the rear of the boat. Wierd!! Not sure what happened. I jumped it from one point to the other with some new wire, waterproof connectors, fire resistant wire protector. Good to go!! Shuts off! Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it!!
