repowering advice

Hello All

I am looking to repower my 19 ft welded aluminum boat.

It presently has a `94 Johnson 150 that the dog clutch has gone on (no reverse), it also low compression on all cylinders (about 40lbs) and one of the coils (I think) is starting to act up.

Anyways I am considering 2 engines at the moment;

A 2008 Mercury Verado 135 that is a lease return with a one year warrantee for $9,500 plus rigging. (unknown hours)

A 2007 Evinrude E-TEC (new) with a 3 year warrantee for $14,000 plus rigging.

I`m leaning towards the E-TEC but I would like to read your opinions or thoughts on these engines. (While keeping it civil of course!)

Thanks for your help!

Hey Mike,

Which ETEC are you looking at? The V4 130hp or the v6 150hp?

Personally I'd love to get an etec but you can see the price dilema.

There is a BRP dealer here in Vancouver selling a 150hp 2009 Evinrude, Etec, Demo Model, 20", White for $11995.00.

Also they have a 150hp 2007 Evinrude, Etec, X-long, with controls. Rebuilt for $9000.00.

I would prefer the Etec as I am a 2-stroke mark....But, that is price is way out of line. Shop around, even if you have to travel 30 or 40 miles.

Keep in mind he's talking loonies (canadian dollars) I think the exchange rate is pretty close to even but there's VAT and all that. Bottom line is that prices in Tampa may not relate to prices up north. ;)

I didn't realize he was Canadian:) Current price on U.S. 135 Etec's is running right at 9K so I still think he can do a lot better...Even with Canadian play money:)

Sorry Guys,

I neglected to say the ETEC is a 150 v6 x long shaft and it has an extended waranty to 5 years.

A little different. Those are selling for 10K to 10.5 K in the U.S. Regardless, ye local dealer is more than a little high.

Well there ya go, that same motor, rebuilt including controls is 9k here in Vancouver. Not sure how much shipping would be or cost for you to take your boat on the ferry here would affect your choice.

But hey, 6k plus controls cheaper is pretty good.:)

There is no comparison on Canadian pricing and US pricing, typically its 1/4-1/3 more no matter what the exchange rate is. Still considering the market has tanked for recreational products across North America I would think you could negotiate a better price.

Is the Verado a fishing lease motor? I would stay away if it was, likely really high hours.

Heres another 150HP motor candidate for $10500 on the island with 80 hours on the clock;

Re: repowering advice

Thanks Trendsetter.

Do you know if there is any major difference between the 2007 and this years models?

You're welcome! I wish I was shopping for a new etec, maybe I can live vicariously through your etec experience:D

I'm not aware of any major differences between 2007 and 2010. Maybe someone else can chime in with more details.

Give lordship a call after the weekend and ask for Murray. He is the owner and is very helpfull.

The one 4jawchuck linked looks like a fine deal also though I am not familar with the dealer.

lol! Said by a man with TWO boats! ;)

I hear what you're saying bud, but there are several reasons I don't go down that road.

I live on a remote island so the selection of used outboards is limited.

My mechanical skills are somewhat limited (or I would consider rebuilding my present outboard) so a warranty is important.

Fuel consumption is important as fuel is expensive here ($1.03 per litre for marked gas) and I have to run at least 1 hour to get to the prime fishing grounds. (Our main reason for boating)

And lastly, we fish in remote areas off the west coast far from assistance. I need an outboard I can rely on.

LOL I hear ya there..... You wouldn't believe how much I hace to scrimp to put these things together..... On rebuilding though.... What about finding a good mechanic in the area and having yours rebuilt..... surely that couldn't cost more than a couple thousand..... or could it? I dunno but might be worth checking out.....

I hear ya on the fuel too.... friggin HURTS to fill up

Re: repowering advice

Update:

I contacted the dealer in Vancouver as trendsetter suggested and they quoted $13,310 for a 2010 ETEC 150.

I let my local dealer know and they where surprised at this price! They have since dropped their price to match but it's a 2007 model. I also have to consider that shipping the 2010 up from Vancouver would be expensive and I would need the local dealer to rig this engine. I'm sure they would not be happy.

Another thing in the back of my mind is that the BRP dealer is in another town which is a ferry ride away. There is another dealer here in my community who deal in Suzuki and Mercury (they used to deal with OMC). The owner has helped me a couple of times with my current motor and has a good reputation so I wonder if its more important to stick with what he carries and forget about the ETEC.

So many decisions!

Anyways I wanted to say thanks for your responses and i will let you know what we decide
