Re: repowering advice

Why in the world don't you buy it from a U.S. dealer and save the $4000.00? At the current exchange rate there is practically no difference in the value of the currency and about $300.00 in freight to you. The GST is at the same rate and will actually end up costing you less and there is no Duty.

Thanks for the kick in the pants Elvin ;)

I will look into that. I would assume the warranty would not be valid. Where did you find out about the shipping costs?

We ship outboards to Canada and the cost isn't really much more than to points in the U.S. Ed's get's the same freight discount we do so I figure around $300.00 freight, $35.00 brokerage fee and then GST. You would probably be better off shipping it to a close point on the mainland if you are across water as the surcharge for that can be as much as $150.00.

Check with your local shop on the price of a 4 cycle V-4 Suzuki, don't thing there that would be that much difference in the weight as the E-Tec is a heavy motor. I think they have a 140 hp in the V-4.

I wonder what the duty costs would be, I imagine it would be in the thousands. I was charged $85 in duty for a $200 used prop from Florida from a private seller who shipped on my FedEx account, still cheaper than buying new but still crazy.

Phoned them today and they said they can't ship here even though their web says "We Ship Anywhere!"

That's weird. I'll make a phone call and see what I can come up with for you.

Re: repowering advice

Well I've decided to go with the 2007 ETEC 150. The shop came down a bit more in price and it seems to be the best deal around, especially with the 5 year warranty.

We took the boat over this morning and hope to have it back by Friday.

Thanks Trendsetter

I'm glad you told me about the Vancouver dealership. That information helped me negotiate a much better price with the local dealer.

How's the dog smelling today?

Warranty is very serious. These new outboards are electronic and I know from buying a new CanAm that BRP doesn't do cross border. So a buying a Americian mail order is out.Where he lives, and boats,I'm not sure I would trust even a 2007. Boats are more important than trucks, you can always walk home, so boat motor costs are less of a factor. Two years back,we vacationed there,it's an overnight ferry trip. Nor is it likely his tech is all that skilled.

Re: repowering advice

Well I finally got to play with the new toy yesterday and I'm impressed!

It starts up instantly, idles and shifts very smoothly. Tops out at 36 knots @ 5800 rpm versus 31 knots with the old 150. I'm using my old 15" three blade stainless prop, I may go up an inch or two. From what I have seen so far, it seems to have considerably better fuel economy.

The cowling is bigger so it almost rubs on the transom when tilted up and laying to one side but I think it will be OK.

So far I am very happy with the E-TEC!

Re: repowering advice

Mike,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, but I was out of the country for a while. Ed's won't do the cross border ship, as Downwindtracker2 alluded to, so(allegedly: must observe the legal crap) what they do is ship to a freight agent in Washington who then ships to Canada. The total freight averages about $700.00 on that size. The warranty would have been tricky though. You would have gotten the warranty, but you would have had to fib about the who/when/where and that aggravation may not have been worth it in the long run....Especially since you are island based.
