Hi All,
Been lurking around this site for a while, and really have to commend so many people taking their time to help each other out
The amount of info that I've gotten just reading through old posts is terrific!
Anyway, I've been reading up on the prop forum lately to try and make a decision on a new stainless prop for a 17' Scout with a 2001 Johnson 90 (2-stroke, 60 deg. looper). The motor setup on this boat originally came with a 14 x 17 OMC 3-Blade AL, and performance was fine with me when new (topping out around 5400 WOT, never really kept track of top speed back then, but remember it was modest, 33-35mph) - since then this prop has become pretty well beat, and I'd like to make the move to stainless for two basic reasons (and hey, if I get a few more out of the top end, so be it
)-
1. My props tend to see a lot of mud and soft bottom during a normal season, and the AL just doesn't hold up, and
2. Often I'm forced to run at planing speed through turning creeks and marsh, and the previous AL had the tendancy to break free in turns...
I've got a chance at a basically new Stiletto Advantage I 13.25 x 17 for a great price, and from what I've read it seems that this series will definitely have more bite in turns that I'm looking for. I've also seen a lot of people recommending a drop in pitch when going to the Stiletto to keep RPMs up - I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this prop in that, will the 3/4" drop in diameter allow me to stay with the 17 pitch on the more agressive prop? Currently my motor is mounted all the way down on the transom, so there is room to go up if necessary...
I realize that prop selection isn't a perfect science and no forum can give a definite answer - I'm just trying to get any insight from those who may have gone through this prop already
Any input is appreciated - Thanks all!
