Volvo Penta Bellows Sealer

I am preparing my parts order for replacement of my bellows. The shop manual indicates that for the U-joint and Bellows Installation, the instructions specify coating the outside surface of the gimbal bearing bore with "Volvo Penta Gasket Sealing Compound or OMC Gasket Sealing Compound".

There are several other components that call for this same appliction, the vertical drive studs being one of them.

I am being told that this product is no longer sold by Volvo Penta.

Is there a replacement product that meets the needs of this application?

No sealer on the bellows. What outdrive do you have? Year?

The outdrive is 1998 - DP-SM 1.95(M22)

The shop manual 7797455-8 refers to using this sealer on numerous pages.

My XDP-B drives have no adhesive on the installation istructions.

If you seal, you can't peek.

If you don't peek, you may not detect water intrusion in time to prevent damage to the u-joint, gimbal bearing, etc.

Could be expensive.

I used bellows adhesive on the drive side of the u-joint bellows, but not on the transom side, so I can loosen the clamp, diconnect exhaust and water hoses, tilt up the drive, diconnect the bellows , and peek. Worked for 3 seasons (saw bright green grease, no water!). Re-attached bellows with (great difficulty). My paranoia.

I sealed last season and had a heck of time getting the bellows off. Have new ones this season, although the old ones held up in spite of VP XDP recall...

Bellow adhesive to use or not to use. I have a 1998 OMC VP SX Cobra sterndrive. Does the u joint bellows require adhesive on the gimble side or just nothing. Seems there are multiple answers
