Re: 3.55 vs 3.73 diff ratio

I can't count the number of people who own 99-up GM's which have speedometers or gas gauges not functioning. Door window motors going out all the time, etc. QUOTE]

I can't count them either, because I have never seen or even heard of that complaint until now. I know at least 6 Silverado owners 99 and up, not one of them has a single complaint.

Don't let it bother you, some people say Dodge transmissions are worse than GM and Ford, and that's just not true either ;)

You can't be saying THAT with a straight face.....everyone knows tranny's are a weak point in Dodge...

GM had a TSB on their instrument clusters. They were changing them out at a pretty regular rate a couple of years ago. My truck is out of warranty and the gauge cluster makes some noise.

Re: 3.55 vs 3.73 diff ratio

i have an older 2002 F150 with 5.4 and 3.55 gear ratio. if the 3.73 was an inexpensive option (couple hundred) i would get it otherwise the 3.55 is fine. i have pulled a 26 foot camper in OD with no problem at all 200 miles at a shot.

Sure they are, to non Dodge owners. And to people that don't have any experience in auto repair.

1. I had 2 Dodges in my time, loved the trucks, not so much the tranny tho...
2. How does having auto repair experience in any way effect how reliable a transmission is? Matter of fact, most people that I know or knew that have or have had a Dodge almost always had a good amount of mechanical skills and experience.

I'm not getting into THAT argument for the thousandth time.

You believe that, and I'll believe all Silverados have crappy dashes ;)

Both the Ford and Dodge are great trucks. Ford has electric brakes and sway control built in and is a very nice feature. I feel you will make a good decision with either truck

Ron

Thats true to a point, but I have 4.30's in my Tundra and I can get 17+ mpg (which better than the Ford and Dodge).

To the OP... if your buying a Ford, get the 3.73.... cause that low output 5.4 is going to need all the help it can get.

EDIT: Thou shalt not bash

It was 2 simple questions.....
I will agree that there are better dash boards out there than the one in my rig....

If I were to buy another truck right now, it would probably be a Ford F-150 for a few reasons. 1. They didn't take gov't money. 2. I like how my friends F-150 4x4 rides and feels. 3. I like how the new Fords look way better than other trucks and definitely better looking than the tundra....
If GM still made the Silverado like the 03-07(classics), I would stick with that because of the way it looks and its not wicked tall like all the trucks are now. But, because they don't Ford is the next best due to previous reasons.

Re: 3.55 vs 3.73 diff ratio

The difference between a 3.55 and 3.73 isn't big enough to be the determining factor in my opinion, if you can't pull it with a 3.55, you aren't going to be pulling it with 3.73's either. Now if you were wanting 4.10's and got stuck with 3.55's i would understand the concern.

On another note, i was at my buddy's house yesterday, he happens to be the parts manager at the local dodge dealer, and we got to talking about the reliability of the newer dodges... He said he thinks it's funny that people are always talking about the dodge trannies being unreliable. He went on to say that they do have more than their fair share of tranny failures, but the biggest problem with the trucks is the front suspension.

His exact words were... "The front suspensions on any of the newer rams are TERRIBLE!!!" Apparently they have an 07 in the shop right now that they had to haul in on a flatbed with 17k miles because the ball joints and various other front end components were shot and the truck had the "death wobble" as he called it. He said that it's common to see them come through with under 30k miles and need a new "front end kit"... Yeah it's so bad they have a whole kit that's supposed to fix the problem, but he said all it does is make them last a little longer, then they're back for more parts. I thought it was interesting anyways...

Why do you feel the need to start bashing? Many here own Toyotas and get great service from them. Please try and stay on topic and check the ignorance at the door.

Your "parts manager" friend is full of it. I worked for a Dodge dealer until 2008, very closely with the parts manager who is still a good friend, there is no "front end kit' and their transmissions fail at the same rate as Ford and GM.

This thread is about gearing, not for you guys to bash different makes on "facts" you heard from your uncle's cousin's one eyed step brother.
