Re: baja with duo-prop????

A couple of comments. Most go fasts run Bravo 1s because Bravo 3s are recommended only up to 60 MPH. That boat is going to be sub 60, so the B3 is a good thing as others have noted. One exception is propeller prices. If you are in shallow water, B3s can get expensive ;) Other than that it should have better hole shot, no prop torque and better low speed handling/less wander.

I would make them absolutely confirm with some degree of super certainty that it is a 385. the 7.4 LX MPI is rated at 310 bhp. The 454 Mag is the 385. If they changed everything required, then OK, but I seriously doubt it. If they put in a complete new 454 Mag 385, then why does it have the old valve covers?

pretty much normal. Everybody's crap is worth well over book and of course in 'better than new' condition.

Re: baja with duo-prop????

As noted, Bravo Threes aren't setup for life above 60, as the water pickups aren't efficient above that speed (but my mental note says it's 65).

But... it takes a heap load of cash and patience to crack the 65-MPH barrier, so having duo-props and running up to the low 60's (if it could even get there, but my money is on 50-55 MPH) is nice when it cruises and runs sweeter and more efficiently.

If you have one of those bugs that makes you cough up 15 grand to go 68-70 with the throttle hammered, skip a duo prop. Actually, it might be more like 20 grand. You need about 475 HP to tell your buddies the GPS read 70.

Otherwise, the duo-props do have their advantages, so who cares if 65 is all you could ever tune for?

:p

thanks philster,i dont want anymore speed then the boat has so thats fine.i just wanted to make sure that the br 3 was ok to run on that boat.what i realy want is a 496 mag ho but hard to find and alot of $$$$$.plus do you know how much more fuel the 496 will use over the 385hp 7.4?do you think 20g is to much for that boat?

Re: baja with duo-prop????

That was a nice Baja, I have the 22' version of the same hull.
That 252 was overpriced.
With that power it would not have been a 60 MPH boat...close, bit not there...upper 50's.

Lots of really nice used Baja's out there if that is what you are looking for.

Re: baja with duo-prop????

You'd rather have the 454 than a 496, but again, I don't think that one is a 385 . . . Dont' worry about fuel, at the same cruise speed fuel use will be about the same. Figure $5 a trip one way or the other ;)

Re: baja with duo-prop????

I'd have a marine survey done before I guessed the price. Check NADA for sanity, but it doesn't seem out of line.

Fuel economy? Hmmm.... I'd say you are in a good range with the setup on it now, given that it's not over-the-top in weight and power and it's got the duo-prop setup.

I'd say you have a combo right there that is hard to beat in terms of power/economy/efficiency/drive-abilty.

Re: baja with duo-prop????

Can't say what a 454 gets, but my Crownline 225 (22') with a 496 HO and a B3 has a best cruise of 3.7 MPG at 28 MPH (2250 RPM). It gets 3.2-3.3 MPG between 35 - 40 MPH. Top speed is 66 MPH at 4600 RPM. It's strong point is ungodly acceleration between 20 - 60 MPH!!

Re: baja with duo-prop????

For comparison:

Cruise economy: With a 502 EFI (virtually identical to 496), I get 2.5 mpg @ 3600 RPM @ 41 MPH.

26.9 feet @ 4900 lbs dry and 3-blade Mirage SS 25 pitch prop.

(for the record, I wouldn't mess with that Crownline. I can hit 61-63..64..65, but 66 is a stretch!. Based on the info, those are very believable numbers for a 22' boat!)
