Just wondering if anyone knows any companies that will insure a boat for someone under 25 years old. I don't own a house to put the boat under and every company I have talked to won't touch me because of my age. I have a 1975 caravelle cuddy 19' with 165hp mercruiser. I have a survey but still can't fund insurance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Surprised you can't put it on with your car insurance.
Or do you not have a car ??

Check with the local chamber of commerce and get hooked up with a customer oriented insurance advisor. If they can't help you, they will refer you to a professional that can.

By the way, it can't go on an auto policy.

Re: Boat insurance Ontario for person under 25

I tried my insurance broker with my car truck and atv but because I'm under 25 they can't get me any. I tried 2 marine only insurance companies and got the same result. They keep saying that I should put it under homeowners but I don't have a house so it doesn't work. One company told me if I could prove I have boat insurance before then they could but it's a catch 22. I can't get it until I have had it before. I will try the chamber of commerce but I may end up having to transfer it to my parents and have them insure it. If that happens does anyone know if my survey is useless and they will have to get one in their name or is it good for a certain period of time for the boat itself regardless of the owner? I don't want to have to pay for another survey. If I can't insure it I am out 400$ in dockage fees and run the risk of using the boat uninsured. Extremely frustrated right now and ready to dump the boat and take up a new hobby.

No idea about Canadian laws but can your parents not insure it without you transferring it to them and they list you as the primary driver?

Assuming your definition of a survey is the same as mine, (somebody checked out your boat for you?) then I dont know about why you would have to transfer a survey report for insurance purposes.....unless your talking some Canadian mumbo jumbo that I have no idea about:D:D...anyway, good for you at the age of less than 25 to be so worried about being insured.

do you rent or live with your parents?

If you have an apartment, you should have renters insurance, and the boat can be added to that policy.

I just don't get it. Ontario law says that you must be able to get insurance even if it is a "special means" policy. May be double the price but if you are licensed for the equipment then it must be made available to you.
Where have you tried so far ???

I have called 7 insurance companies in Sudbury. Some brokers and some independant companies and everyone so far has said that the primary operator has to be 25 years of age or older or has to have had boat insurance for a minimum of 2 years (I don't know how you can prove boat insurance if no one will give it to you). I'm just mad that I have spent thousands of dollars on my boat and can't insure it so they are pretty much forcing me to go out without it and risk the chance of being sued if something were to happen.

My broker was able to give me a quote while I was under 25 (just turned 25 a few weeks ago). Try calling CRE insurance brokers in markham. I had my first auto policy there and they are very nice.

I am not sure what age group they insure but I got a quote with this company and it seemed reasonable you might want to try them if you have not.

If you live with your parents you can add it to their home owners policy and pay them the extra cost it adds.

Register the boat under your parents as was stated, or also as was stated, try a broker. We use Northstar Marine Brokers 1-866-717-9295. Give them a shot. They were very helpful for us, as our home insurance provider won't cover inboard boats (wtf!) or boats over 20' LOA. Our plan is like $500 for the year including all perils (rodent damage, fire, trailer damage, towing, sinking etc). So hopefully you won't get hit too hard. Being under 25 in Ontario is like being a convicted criminal as far as the insurance game goes....try insuring a sport bike...

Thanks for the help guys. I will try all of them this week. It will probably end up going into my parents name. Does anyone know if a survey can be transferred? If I put it in my parents name they are going to be required to have a survey due to the age of the boat. Am I going to need another survey?

I'm turning 24 in may, and I have a Brand new 2010 Glastron GT 205 and have mine going through Geico. I also have my 06 Trailblazer through them, and my boat insurance for $30k worth of coverage ran me only $245 for the year.

Not sure why someone wouldn't insure you. I have perfect credit and perfect driving record.

That's easy, you're not in Ontario. We are literally held hostage here by the insurance companies. A friend of mine was quoted over $10K/year for motorcycle coverage becuase he had two minor tickets over the last three years.

Re: Boat insurance Ontario for person under 25

Hey dude, i am just to your East in North Bay. I boat on Lake Nipissing. My brother has his sailboat on Lake Ramsay there in Suds.... I join him in summer for the races and just for fun.

Anyway, I'm 37, and use Co-operators, and it is on my house policy as well.... but when I was 18-21 I had boats, and they insured me then (maybe the rules were different?). My boats then were all power vessels, and in my name. Never had a problem, and I must add I had a slew of speeding tickets with my truck at that age.... I imagine you probably called co-operators though...

If you want to do this on your own, without the 'rents, You could try getting a "tenant" or "renters" policy.... which will cover your contents at your home with mom and dad.

See if you can insure your "stuff" in your parents house, say $10,000 content replacement.... with 1,000,000 liability (you know, in case mom falls on your skateboard) this policy shouldn't be more than $100 a year..... then tack the boat on that..

The talk of surveys baffles me, I've never had a survey on a boat before.... not for these <20 foot boats...
