I have only owned the boat for a year now and had it out on the water 15 or 20 times. I have noticed since day one that the throttle does nothing until it gets to about 1/3 of the way. is this normal? if not how do I adjust it. BTW, it is the electromatic single cable control with the red "start" handle at the rear.

I don't think you have a problem as long as you are getting WOT with the full range of movement. I have a 1968 Johnson 100 with electromatic; will check my manual and report.

Re: 1966 100HP throttle adjustment

Sound's like something is wore out, or out of adjustment. When moving the throttle lever at the remote control, does the control cable instantly start to move at the engine? Does the distributor body start to pivot at this time? At what point do the throttle plates in the carb start to move? It is a must that the engine linkage is in proper sync. Do you have a manual? This is not a simple engine to sync, and link without the proper information. The engine must be in proper time, and linkage in proper order, or this will result in a sick running engine.

so I need to do a "link and synch"? I have downloaded a 525 page service manual which was helpfull last week when I timed the distributor after flywheel removal. I will have to search through it for this procedure. if I have problems I will ask further at that time. but first I need to fix a 1" x 3" hole in my hull :(

don't worry folks, I am an ASE L1 Master Tech with 20+ years experience. I just don't know all the special quirks and terminology involved with boats.

Re: 1966 100HP throttle adjustment

As I read your original question, it sounds like you are saying there is lost motion in the control cable. Some back lash is unavoidable, but if it is doing the job it needs to do, it is ok. By doing the job I mean giving you wide open throttle and also pulling it back against the idle speed stop when in neutral. Like I mean to say, there will be some delay between "in gear" and throttle increase as you move the big control lever. That's just the way they are.

Probably the first thing to be objectionable would be the fast idle (red lever). It needs to kick the throttle open a bit for easy starting. Then returning it to the full up position pulls it back to idle speed stop position. The amount of throttle "kickup" can be adjusted by the screw in the slot beside it.

If you just can't get it all working together because of excessive backlash, then it probably is replace the cable time. Er....excessive bends and curves in the cable or lack of clamps along its length can also cause backlash.

Sorry to hear about your boat! You have a couple of experts, which I am not, posting in your thread so with your skill-set and their knowledge this fix should be a piece of cake. I checked my non-factory manual and found three paragraphs on the "link & sync" but nothing on the remote control/cable movement. When I operate my remote control, there is significant pause before throttle linkage movement. Initially, I can feel the electric-shift switch cycle to forward and then the cable starts to move. I would estimate my "gap" to be the first 25 percent which is pretty close to your estimate of 1/3. Good luck!

after reading yours and willyclay's replies I am thinking my main control is normal, but the red lever is somewhat hokey. I see the screw, if I turn it CW what does that do?

I will go after the idle stop adjustment on the carbs first, right?
