Pull harder... They can be quite tight..
Sometimes I clamp the drive-shaft in a vice (with soft jaws) and knock the front of the housing with a length of wood (NEVER anything metal)...
Do you mean that you have the drive in a drivestand and the drive-shaft in a vise and then knock on the front of the upper housing?
I mean I have the drive shaft clamped in a vice and knock the front of the housing, yes.... I don't owe a drive stand... (if you still have the leg in one piece, split it first... it's 10 times easier, and a good excuse to check everything else).
Chris.......
...When i am done with the repair is it okay to first install the upper housing on the bell housing and after that the lower housing? Or is that looking for trouble?
Henk
Done that plenty of times myself... Just be a bit more careful about getting the drive in forward gear, and lining up the water tube and shift shaft... And don't forget to fill the sucker with oil at the end of the job...![]()
BEFOR YOU SPLIT IT drain the gear oil out and some times you can use a blow gun and add some pressure to help push it out but not more than 10 to 20 lbs to keep blowing the other seals out and it needs to come out strait be shur not to get it cocked it the housing
you mean to blow out the driveshaft with compressed air? Where should i connect the air?
Not really a good idea...![]()

They have to come out absolutly straight. take the top cover off and try to push it out you can use the yoke to straighten the bearing pack by gently tapping it sideways and around good luck Bill
Did you undo the yokeshaft nut on the inside of the drive or the big retaining nut with the Merc special tool spanner wrench?
Sometimes they can be tough to get out, but they will come, just have patience. 1 of the tricks I have is using a prybar that i've bent over a little more (to about a 75 degree angle) You can slide it in behind the upper drive shaft (vertical shaft in the upper drive) and put the tip of it on the drive gear nut. With the tip if it on I slowly tap tap tap with a 2lb dead blow. 1 thing you absolutely can't do is pry against the driveshaft.
I loosened the big retaining nut and kept the driveshaft straight while hammering on the upper housing. I think that the trustring behind the retaining nut got stuck. The drive shaft does not want to move anything. Do you think i can remove the nut on the end of the yoke to get the driveshaft out so i get space to remove all the parts behind the retainer nut?
Keep pulling. Was there any water in the drive?
