my bayliner 175 2005 has lube in the drive bellows. Took the drive off and loosened the retainer nut to take out the driveshaft, but the shaft won't come out. Anybody an idea how to force it out?

Pull harder... They can be quite tight..

Sometimes I clamp the drive-shaft in a vice (with soft jaws) and knock the front of the housing with a length of wood (NEVER anything metal)...

Do you mean that you have the drive in a drivestand and the drive-shaft in a vise and then knock on the front of the upper housing?

I mean I have the drive shaft clamped in a vice and knock the front of the housing, yes.... I don't owe a drive stand... (if you still have the leg in one piece, split it first... it's 10 times easier, and a good excuse to check everything else).

Thanks a lot Chris for helping me out. I indeed have the leg in one piece and it is quite heavy to work with since also do not have a drive stand. It is the first time i am working on an outdrive, since we do not have a good mechanic on island.

When i am done with the repair is it okay to first install the upper housing on the bell housing and after that the lower housing? Or is that looking for trouble?

Done that plenty of times myself... Just be a bit more careful about getting the drive in forward gear, and lining up the water tube and shift shaft... And don't forget to fill the sucker with oil at the end of the job... :D

thanks again for your info, feel now more secure to do the job. I also need a new exhaust elbow; do you suggest to go original with this important part or is one from Osco also ok. We are always in salt water

BEFOR YOU SPLIT IT drain the gear oil out and some times you can use a blow gun and add some pressure to help push it out but not more than 10 to 20 lbs to keep blowing the other seals out and it needs to come out strait be shur not to get it cocked it the housing

you mean to blow out the driveshaft with compressed air? Where should i connect the air?

I agree leave the air compressor turned off.Remove the top square cap from the drive so that you can help push the carrier out and take a close inspection of the gears. And while it's apart put a new water pump in there.

Not really a good idea...

No, since for seal pressure testing they only advise 6 psi, to not damage the seals. And if it is stuck, the air will not help anyway. Will go the way you describe,

Thanks for the warning!

Chris.......

I tried to get the shaft out by putting a chain tru the front yoke and hanging it from a beam of the carport. I positioned the drive level in the horizontal position with the shaft straight up. Started using 2 peces of wood to get t out, but no luck. Eventually used a sledgehammer with the piece of wood and hit it hard, but it does not move a millimeter. The only thing is that the wood chips off. I am afraid the mechanic did something wrong when he assembled it the last time.

Should i just it hit as hard as i can?

They have to come out absolutly straight. take the top cover off and try to push it out you can use the yoke to straighten the bearing pack by gently tapping it sideways and around good luck Bill

Tried everything but does not come out. As far as i can see, it looks like the trustring is bend and sits on the thread, preventing the drive shaft from coming out?? I am thinking about loosing the nut on the end of the yoke to get the shaft out and then cut the trustring out to take the bearings etc out.
Anybody did this before?

Re: driveshaft stuck in housing

Did you undo the yokeshaft nut on the inside of the drive or the big retaining nut with the Merc special tool spanner wrench?

Sometimes they can be tough to get out, but they will come, just have patience. 1 of the tricks I have is using a prybar that i've bent over a little more (to about a 75 degree angle) You can slide it in behind the upper drive shaft (vertical shaft in the upper drive) and put the tip of it on the drive gear nut. With the tip if it on I slowly tap tap tap with a 2lb dead blow. 1 thing you absolutely can't do is pry against the driveshaft.

I loosened the big retaining nut and kept the driveshaft straight while hammering on the upper housing. I think that the trustring behind the retaining nut got stuck. The drive shaft does not want to move anything. Do you think i can remove the nut on the end of the yoke to get the driveshaft out so i get space to remove all the parts behind the retainer nut?

Keep pulling. Was there any water in the drive?

When i took of the drive, there was a lightbrown mixture, i think consiting of lube, rust (from the U-joint assembly) and a little water in the drive bellows. However it was not much. I lost about 2 cups of drive lube since the last time the front seal of the drive was replaced. (about 100 engine hours).

It feels so stuck in there, like i said before, even with a sledgehammer it did not want to move a bit. That is why want to loose the endnut on the yoke and take the parts out one by one.
