Does this sound right?

My 1987 17 foot bayliner capri topes out at 27-28 mph on the gps.(2 adults 2 small children) This is with a 85hp force.
Is this right? Just seems slow..when peddle boats are passing me! lol

Thanks

It depends on what your engine RPM's are and what pitch prop you're running. If you have that information, you can better determine if something is wrong with the motor or is it just your set up. Either one can cause less than optimal performance.

Not sure of the prop pitch. May be original. Also never had a tach on the engine.

Re: 1987 17" bayliner 85hp force

The propeller should have some numbers on it. Sometimes it's a manufacturer's number, or it can actually be the diameter and pitch of the prop. If you see something like 13 1/2 X 17, that means it's a 13 1/2 in diameter, 17 pitch prop. 27 or 28 mph seems a bit slow, but without knowing the RPM and prop info, it's pretty tough to determine where the problem is.

Does the motor run OK? Is it hard to start etc.

The prop if original will have a number stamped in it somewhere.Like a 17 or 19. That is your pitch.
Do a spark test and a compression test.If that is ok.Now get a tach and hook it up.Or ask a mechanic to help.
With out the RPM and those test then we really can't help too much.J

i will check prop tomm... Basically I was asking if someone with the same boat, knew if these numbers were right? Does your boat do 27mph max?

I have a maxim 1800 with a 90 Force which is probably similar and had it in the water for the 1st time this weekend after replacing a piston and broken rings. At 3500 RPM it showed 25 on speedo and 22 gps. After a few hours running I opened it up for a short burst and speedo showed 37, gps batteries died. This was with just me and a 13x15(I think) prop.

I have a 1989 17' quantum bass boat with an 85 horse. With me and the wife in it we can get going about 34-35 at WOT 5100 RPM (gps). I usually run it at 4000-4100 rpm to cruise and we hit around 25 MPH (gps). Another factor is trim. Mine is broke so these numbers represent running with the motor straight up and down.

there are no numbers on the prop. Are they on the inside?(if I remove the end cap and prop)

We have an 84 Bayliner Capri with the 85hp engine and get 43mph out of it. That is gps but there is no tach so am really operating blindly. It really hauls for what it is. Out of the hole and for a good distance after it will take a lot of i/o's but then they catch up and walk away. Back in 84 when we bought it it was considered a pretty fast boat being only 1050 lbs including engine.

Re: 1987 17" bayliner 85hp force

I have a 16' mark twain tri-hull with a 100hp 1979 chrysler. My aluminum prop only has these #'s: a623265 and also 623. I googled these numbers and found nothing. I also have a SS prop that is 13 1/4 x 17. The SS prop is a little bigger. I am not sure if anyone can tell from the prop # on the aluminum prop, but would I be getting better performance with the SS prop? I am a little afraid of using a SS prop. I have heard that they will not break off if you hit something, resulting in damaging something else in the lower unit. My boat will travel around 35 mph at WOT so speed is not really an issue. Also, I do not have an end cap. Does that hurt performance?

I did find the size of the SS prop on the inside of prop(removing end cap and prop. The aluminum part # was on the opposite end.

You need to do the diagnostics and make sure there is nothing wrong.Your boat should do almost 40 even if the prop is not the right one.I worked at a Bayliner dealer in those years and drove a bunch of those boats.
They all ran great for a small boat.
One simple question:do you know how to use the trim when underway?
Check out the motor.J

Is that with original prop?

28 mph seems a bit slow. I have a 1989 17' Maxum with an 85 hp Force. At wot it will do 36mph gps at 5200 rpm. I have a 15 pitch aluminum prop on it.

Even without power trim/tilt you should be a lot faster.Do the tests I recomended. That will help in finding out what's up.
Remove the prop and check the size.J

I took the prop off... no markings anywhere. Is there a way to measure pitch?

I will do a compression test over the weekend.
Also this outboard has a hrdrofoil on it. Was that standard?

Re: 1987 17" bayliner 85hp force

They never put hydrofoils on new boats.People added them later.Sounds like it was too slow for the last guy too.
It's unusual that there are no markings on the prop.
If it doesn't have a # around the driveshaft hole, then there is a letter stamped on the side of the prop between the blades.
It could be a 17 or 19 with nothing else on it.Sometimes they are very faint.
No way to measure the pitch unless you can compare it to another.J

Re: 1987 17" bayliner 85hp force

I have a Bayliner Capri 16ft with 85hp engine and get 43mph alone with fishing gear and 40 with two people.

Without a tach it will be impossible to determine if you have any issues. It will be guess work because you don't know if the engine is running at its published 5000-5500 rpm mark.
