My parents keep my youngest 4 days a week due to my schedule and my wife's college schedule. So in the afternoons I spend time with him. He actually a great kid....I'm shocked at how well behaved and knowledge seeking he his. His favorite things are trains, big trucks, anything with a trailer behind it, and boats.

So when today when I get over there I start installing the guide posts and getting ready to do the wiring on the trailer. He sees me and stops helping my parents (they were doing yardwork). He comes over and asks "Can I help?" I replied not right now since I was drilling holes into the metal frame and didn't need him getting the shavings in his hands. I told him I'd let him know when he can help.

Well I get the prep done and tell him he could help. I had him run the wire snake up the guide posts so we could pull the light wiring. He did exactly how I told him and even insisted he did all the work. So I let him. Then we had to pull the new wiring harness through the tounge and frame of the trailer. Once again he ran the snake and pulled the wire. Then the wire needed to be run inside the channel. Luckily there are rings installed that the wire can run through. I asked him if he could see them. "YUP"..... Me: "Ok now take the end of the brown and yellow wire and run it through the first one." Him "ok". "Now keep doing that all the way down". He ran it like he was a pro. Then it was time for the other side. He grabbed the other wire pair and ran it down the other side just like the first. "Ok now we have to clean up...I have to go get your brother and sister from their dad. (they're my step kids). He said "OK".

Now here's the kicker....in the middle of picking up the tools he says "Daddy, thanks for helping me fix the trailer" (no, he didn't mis-speak. He actually meant HE was the worker and I was the HELPER). Little turd....lol

Anyway, just had to share. I got a chuckle out of it after a long day at work.

Being a Dad can be a lot of fun, but being a Granpa. . . now, that is real rewarding. :)

Re: My 3.5 year old trips me out....

I was in residential remodeling most of my life...I did a lot of work on my sisters house thru the years. I remember when my oldest nephew( graduating from Temple Law school May 20th) was still in diapers... he would see my truck pull up at his house.....I could see him at the door , in his diaper...lol... and watch him take off up the staircase...to put on his PlaySkool toolbelt....he HAD to be in on EVERYTHING I ever did to the house....once,I had my crew there to replace concrete patio and walkways at her house ...he rolled his full Playskool wheel barrow, that HE loaded, up to the back of my stakebody , so I picked it up and dumped onto the truck...he went crazy ! HE wanted to dump it over in the truck ! ... had to refill his wheel barrow with the chunks, and lift him up onto the truck , so HE could dump it over !!!!
I have two daughters myself , and my youngest was the same way....still loves to watch and do everything on her cars, everyone she knows asks her to put something together......she graduates college next year....Kutztown U.
Glad you have that bond started....good for you brother...you will not regret it.

You are a really great dad to give your child this experience. It takes patience to teach a little boy of that age, to do things. There are lots of ways to spend time with a child, but I think that the moments of shared accomplishment are among the most special, especially when they involve all the milestones in a kid's life.

My dad was a good man, but when it came to being "handy," he was all thumbs. The poor guy used to struggle through even simple tasks, like putting all of the toys together at Christmas time. We would hear him from our rooms upstairs, as he said a few minor cuss words, when he couldn't get someting to fit. My mom used to laugh and knew better than to ask him to fix a sink, or any other household fixture.

Fortunately for her, her stepfather, who was just my "grampy" to me, lived with us from middle fall to middle spring, every year. He painted and fixed up just about every house that we ever lived in, always having the skills to get things done. Like your son does with you, I used to follow him around and he would teach me how to paint, or use a pipe wrench, or hammer a nail, etc. I loved that man more than I could ever describe. He was my hero, "'cause my grand-daddy could fix anything .... plus he had boats!

I'm glad you made this post, because I always enjoy anything to do with kids, plus you just gave me a little "blast from the past," to go with that.

Nice post!

Great story. I currently have two daughters and they have no interest at all when I'm working on things. They only care whne I'm hooking the boat up to the truck then it's "where are we going". lol. We just found out April 22nd that my wife is pregnant. She said if feels different this time so keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully it's finally my boy.

One thing about kids, if give them purpose, it builds self esteem and makes them confident in everything they do.

Involving them in things you do no matter how frustrating it can be when you need to get the job done, is one of the best gifts you can give them.:)

I don't know. I have two girls and they always liked to help. I recall once one of my daughters coming out to help me work on the car--I'd learned from painful experience to make sure they changed into "work clothing" before allowing it--and she proudly came out to help explaining to me she had changed into her "work dress".

A task that might take a half hour by myself may take an hour and a half with their help, but that was a significant part of the fun of it!

Re: My 3.5 year old trips me out....

Update on my 3.5 year old. Tonight I was lying on my side looking at my laptop and he came and sat down straddling me. He looks at me and says "Daddy, you're a boat trailer." confused I said "Ok". Then he took my arm and raised it straight above my head, then out forward at an angle. He said "Now that's the stop." Then he proceeded to put his hands on top of his head like a triangle and slides up my body like a boat going on a trailer.

That boy just ain't right. LOL

I know what you mean these are my Grandbabys (step) but like I said my Grandbabys. They always want to help papa and I always let them help when safe even if it adds a hour to finish what ever I am doing. That is excellent what you are doing and like me you will learn so much from the little guys. Good job...
