I pulled the flywheel on my 62 Evinrude 10hp to replace the coils, condensers, and points. I want to replace the spark plug wires, but I cant figure out how to remove the plate that the coils are on so I can get to the wires.

Is this something that has to be pulled off like the flywheel?

Thanks for the help

See the two phillips head screws through the coils? And two more between the coils and points? Loosen them several turns, you don't have to completely remove them. Then the armature plate will simply lift off--after you disconnect the wires and throttle linkage.

Yep and also take note on what position your plate is, so it'll be easier to line the screws up with the correct holes in the ring.:D

Right on! cant believe i didn't notice it before, I just took the two phillips head one that are between the coil and the points, I took one coil off and the plate was loose, but didn't realize that was what held it on.
Thank you very much!

I changed the plug wires and boots, fuel lines and a few other things...now I am working on the new points and they came with a little capsule of grease, is that just for where the arm pivots on the shaft?

The kit also came with a piece of felt...what the hell is that for? It didn't have that before:confused::confused:

Your on the right track. The felt will slip onto one set of points and the felt then rides against the shaft. The lube goes on the shaft exactly where the felt goes and the felt distributes the grease onto the shaft for the next twenty years. I see in your pic. your felt is missing but the clip that holds it might still be locked onto the points. Have a close look. Best of luck. Rick.
Edit: Have a look at this from the Top Secret File.

I was told to take that little capsul before you start working on the points.:D:D

Just lookin' at your picture, the coil that you removed was infact arcin' out on the armeture plate. Just to the left of that, you'll see the little piece that holds the felt (right under the phillips screw). The felt goes between the little 90 degree tabs and where you see in one of the tabs, it looks like there is a hole punched in. The felt sits even with the edge of that tab and the little partially punched hole, holds the felt in place. Then you place the little metal piece back on the post from where it came, with the felt in it. In the capsul, is a little bit of grease for the cam. Rub the cam down with the grease and that will keep the heels of your points from wearing down.
