Hey ya'll,

I have a tear in the bellows(top one), and the tilt when trying to move up or down is just
clicking. I have just purchased this boat and dont know what Aq130 it is, you know a,b,c
etc... but i would really like some help on tilt really. The bellows I know I can repair with the help i've seen in this forum(greatly aprreciated), but need help on tilt.

The guy I bought it from said the tilt just stopped working without any warning.
I'm picking up Seloc manual but need tips and tricks from experienced boaters out there.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 Bellows and tilt repair

Welcome.

I would pull the motor off and test it or have it tested. If it is good we'll go from there.

You can download a manual for your engine and outdrive in the adults only sticky.

While you have the upper off, check a couple other things as well, ujoints, intermediate bearings, and change out the water intake fitting on top of the intermediate assembly if it is corroded.

Let us know how the work goes.:)

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 Bellows and tilt repair

The nameplate for the engine is just forward of the starter. That'll tell you which flavor it is. The D model typically came with the 280 outdrive. Both the C and D came with the Solex carbs. The A & B models came with the Zenith / Stromberg side draft carbs.

The Volvo manuals are posted in the "adults only" section above thanks to Don S. I've found that having both the official service manual and the Seloc manual is a good idea.

I will be working on boat next monday and I will report what I find.
The engine has two carbs if that helps on identifying model, Bayliner 1978 but I know that doesn't really help.

Check the wire harness for the tilt, there is a connector in there that can corrode.

How many wires are going into your tilt motor?

It looks like two from the looks of it.
Why would it just click?

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 Bellows and tilt repair

Fixed the tilt, the wires were corroded(wheew) but I found a bigger problem.
There is milky oil on the dipstick now, was not there when initially tested
and need any info on what problem might be and if this is the reason motor
does not stay on? I think the scumbag who sold me the boat
said "runs great just needs a bellows replacement and carb cleaned" did zero maintenence on this boat. I need help on where to start on milky oil.

Thanks

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 Bellows and tilt repair

Milky oil is from water. Is the oil level high? Normal?

The only way to get water in the oil is from a cracked block or a leaking oil cooler. I hope its your oil cooler. I've never worked on an AQ130 but I would try to isolate the oil cooler and pressure test it.

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 Bellows and tilt repair

I think its high but not sure, I will be out tues working on this problem.
One of the marine shops out here in Vegas told me to change the oil and
run engine for awhile, see what happens with oil. What kind of oil should i use
for this AQ130?

Thanks

SAE 30 should be fine. Thats also what you use in the outdrive.

ONe oil change isn't going to clean alll the milky oil out so don't be suprised if the new oil is cloudy. Pay close attention to the oil and the oil level. Let us know what you find.

Will do.
Also if gasket is bad or oil cooler is bad should I do this work myself? I'm not intimidated
but I don't have a garage full of tools and my mechanic skills are very limited.
:)

Thanks for the advice!

Replacing the oil cooler is probably not a big deal however first you need to figure out what's wrong with the engine. Changing the oil isn't going to find the problem unless somehow water got in the oil by some freak accident. Which gasket are you referring to? Sometimes finding the problem is more difficult than the fix, however water in the oil can only be caused by a couple of things. Personally, I would try to pull the oil cooler and pressure test it. Again I haven't work on an aq130 so I can't say how difficult it is to pull the oil cooler. PP40 has a 130, maybe he'll have some thoughts.

Removed head, gasket was bad, but even worse head is cracked.
Had it checked by machine shop and they delivered the bad news.
If anyone has any idea where I can find this part i would greatly appreciated it.
Thanks.

A marine bone yard is your best bet or start asking around and see if any of the dealers can give you any recommendations. They may have old parts laying around or know of someone who does. Make sure you check the rest of the engine carefully before investing too much more into it. It's too bad you weren't able to perform compression and leakdown tests first. The reason I say that is because rebuilding an AQ130 will cost the same as rebuilding an overhead cam engine and parts are a little more available for the OHC flavors.

You can use an automotive B20 head but do some research first. I'm not sure of all the differences but know that the marine version uses double valve springs and uses stellite hardened exhaust valves. The automotive version will most likely be fuel injected but you should be able to plug the injector ports. Google is your friend on this one. Don't pay much attention to the performance threads. Porting and polishing won't help much for the marine version.

By the way - you're not the first person to buy a boat after hearing "all it needs is a bellows". I've heard of a guy who ended up totally gutting the hull rebuilding stringers, transom, and deck before even getting to the point of replacing the bellows

Thanks for the info and thanks for the sugar coating of "your not the only jackass
with money to throw away".
This forum really helps and i'm gonna take it real slow and find the parts.
I will keep popping my head in now then for anybody with parts info.

Thanks again.

Will an aq120b head work on a aq130? They are both four cyl.
but the aq120b uses only 1 carb, mine has two. Any info?

Thanks

They're totally different engines. The AQ120B is an overhead cam engine based on the Volvo B21 block.

If the whole engine is available and in decent shape, that could be an option for a swap. You'll need a different exhaust pipe but other than that it'll be relatively painless. Just keep in mind you'll be losing a few horsepower going to an engine with a single carb.

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 white oil on my dipstick?

IMO, the 120b's are not a good repower. They have the solex side draft carb and are not supported well for parts. I would look for an AQ131 or 151. Even a 125 would be a better option.
