Re: Volvo AQ130/270 white oil on my dipstick?

IMO, the 120b's are not a good repower. They have the solex side draft carb and are not supported well for parts. I would look for an AQ131 or 151. Even a 125 would be a better option.

You're right - I was only thinking about the head.

Wondering about the shape of the existing block. Lacking history other than that the head is cracked, I'd be questioning what happened. Was it caused by overheating? Freezing? Would be a shame to pay for a rebuilt head only to find the block is cracked as well.

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 white oil on my dipstick?

I live in Vegas and I don't think freezing would be the issue.
Overheating maybe, but how can you tell? I found a head from a guy
in Maine for $100, says it's good, i'm hesitant to pull the trigger on purchase
cause I can't see it. Also found a complete good running engine on marine express.com for 1500.00, just plug n play. What do ya'll think?

For the complete engine, without a compression test and a test run, there's no way of telling what shape it's in. "Good" is a relative term.

I'd be tempted to pay a mechanic to check out your existing block to see if it's worth keeping.

You might try craigslist and do a search for volvo, aq130, or heads and see what you come up with. I've seen some within 100 miles of me that are boats with engines that the owners say were rebuilt recently and that they never got around to finishing the hull rebuild. Kind of a long shot but I've seen them as low as $800 but you'll need to dispose of the old hull.

It's a tough decision.

Thanks Pirate, I'll keep searching for parts around here
and go to the boat yards next week.

Re: Volvo AQ130/270 white oil on my dipstick?

After a lot searching of Volvo part dealers, web sites and craigslist I
found a complete aq130 and 270 from a guy who basically didn't use
his boat. I had to pull everything out (motor and outdrive) and get the head
tested(crossing fingers) at a machine shop. All the other parts i'm keeping as
spares. Best of all I got everything and I mean everything for a mere 100.00:)
I don't think the boat owner knew anything about boats, he said " I got boat
from a friend who owed me money" and used twice before fuel pump failing.
Any thoughts? Advice?

Thanks

Sounds like you got one heck of a deal. Having spares around for an older engine is allways a good idea.

A couple of things to think of with the head. Might be a good idea to have the valves done while it's in the shop. If you need new exhaust valves, IPD has the stellite hardened valves at less than the VP dealerships. They also have guides and retainers and it pays to shop around for parts. The price of a marine grade head gasket is a little steep so you may want to look around at different suppliers. If you've taken the copper cooling lines off of the exhaust manifold, it's best to buy new o'rings and reseat everything. It can be a real bear so use the best pipes that you have off of the two engines. As a last resort, RTV can seal up the difficult holes - just let it cure to get a good seal.

If you don't have a modern fuel filter/separator assembly in the boat, now would be a good time to install one. They have them here at iboats and NAPA can get them for you as well.

You've got some potential resale value in the spare carbs, exhaust manifold, tilt mechanism and some of the outdrive parts but might want to hold off on selling them until you get a season on your existing rig.

When you start putting everything together, start a new thread and let us know how it's going.
