Hi,

Photos to come later this week.

1) Well I got a good deal a few weeks ago on a 87 Bayliner Capri 1900. I paid $500.00 for the boat, trailer with a Force 125 OB. The first thing I needed to do was get the engine running, less that 30 bucks for the new head gasket and some great advise in the Force forum and she is up and running in a tub test /w 125 on all 4 Cylinders, it should go up once it is run on the lake with a full de-carb. The lower unit is fine and was rebuilt in 08, I did replace the impeller and lower unit oil, checked the seals etc. I did have to buy a Heli Coil kit because one of the bolt holes was stipped so that was another $27 to get the head sealed good. So $57.00 and my labor to get the engine running again.

2) Well the people that owned before me just let it sit in the back yard under a tree for 2 seasons un covered even though I got the transom cover, factory bimini and bow cover along with a boat cover, go figure. The external covers were very dirty so I cleaned them up as best I could so I could get them streched and snapped back on. I took out all the cushions and called around to see if I could find a decent price for a pro to recover, if this was a much newer boat I would probably have dropped some cash into a pro recover but I enjoy doing things myself anyway and with the help of this forum I should do fine. I did check into copycat and they never responded to my request for a quote.

3) I was stupid and did not track my progress of this resto with photos from the beginning but as many know when it comes to seat covering replacement you pretty much have to salvage what you can of the rotted wood to get a good pattern and shoot for the moon, I was happy to find that most of the wood was not so bad but did need to be replaced. I went with 1/2 Ply and painted it with an epoxy based paint "Garage Floor Paint" 3 Coats all around which I have used in the past on a 89 Sunbird for the floor, this stuff is $25 a gallon and does a really good job at sealing the wood, I did sell my sunbird the same season so I guess I will know how good my cheapness holds up.

4) Well now that the engine is running it's time to replace the vinyl on the bow cushions, the back seats and the back rest, these are the easiest to do so I will start replacing the side rail vinyl for the sides and the bow along with the center panels after I get the easy vinyl covering done. I do not sew nor do I have a sewing machine so it has been a hiding of the pleats game, but all in all they look fine "Photos Soon"

5) I had to replace the back port jump seat wood where the speakers is installed and also a 14 x 10 piece of wood for the floor, it looks like over time the element had craked the glass and a portion of the wood in the area was soggy, I checked the foam and shop vacced it over a few days to dry it out, under this area is all glass so the was no rot any further than where I cut, I used the same paint as above and I added foam to seal the area and used the foam to secure the wood in place.

I purchased all my vinyl at Joanne's here in GA and it cost me about $60.00 US for the marine vinyl, it seems a little bit thinner than the factory vinyl but it has good backing and the good thing is I did not have to replace any of the foam which is a huge money saver. The most expensive part so far has been the air stapler and the stainles steel staples about $91.00 for 5 thousand staples and the chepest staple gun I could find locally that would shoot 3/8 stainless stell staples.

I bought 2 back to back seats from ebay from a 1989 bayliner capri, I did this only because the new ones in a less expensive price range are not very comfortable and the recovering of mine I am not interested in taking on this season, so for what I would have paid for 2 new ones I paid for a very good set of original Bayliner back to back seats. The seats were a good deal but the shipping is killer on ebay as usual. I also have my origial seats that I can probably sell to make a little back on what I put out on these.

Pics of Seats/ I am not too fond of the pink bayliner put in their patterns, oh well it's a seat right?

Re: 1987 Bayliner Capri 1900 Restore

I have uploaded some photos of the work I did on the Head Cover a few weeks ago before bolting everything back together. It is raining here today so I cannot get exterior photos of the boat, these will come tomorrow probably.

I have added more photos of the capri, mostly exterior because of the weather this morning I did not want to remove the bow and transom covers.

Not a bad boat for 500? eh, I also got 2 sets of skis, PFD's a wakeboard and 2Slalom ski's.

I have the rear jump seats, back rests, left and right bow seats completed, photos later today.

Re: 1987 Bayliner Capri 1900 Interior Restore

I just got one of those too. Mine is a 1991 capri 1800 we got for $700. After parting out some of the Force 90 we got it down to about $250. I still have some more parts to sell, but we also have to put money into the interior, and the new(to us) outboard. Got a great deal on a 1975 Johnson 85hp. 150 on all 4 cylinders, fresh rebuilt on carbs and water pump.
I think we are going to buy the Bayliner replacement seats. I think the back to back seats are going to be too difficult to recover.
Keep us posted, I may have some questions for you in the future.

Hi Hogger thanks and grats on your bayliner find.

It took some time to find seats beause I felt the same as you on the cost/time to recover the back to back originals so I found a pair on epay for 162 each, not sure what color you are looking for but these were my second choice if I lost the bid on the 89 seats.

I have moved the photos for my project to google because Photobucket is a pain.

Here are the updated links.

The exterior of the boat-

Link to the work done on the head cover before bolting it back on-

Link to the original interior-

Link to the on going work for the new interior-

I took the advise of using 1/4 inch Ply and cutting slits in the piece to make it flex, I did not have to use water because I used one piece for now but will cut another for each front bow curve once it sits bolted for 48 hours, maybe it will rain tonight and help me speed up the bend but it is not stressed so I hope it cures tomorrow since it is supposed to be hot and sunny. I did soak the wood good once it was attached to soften it up some more.

The sharp curve portion at the front of the bow I decided to make 1 piece and cut slits and soaked it for about 1 hour to make it bend easier, I will soak it again once it dries to shape to get a perfect bend, I dont know why Bayliner did not go with a singe piece in the center to begin with, it looks nicer I think. I will have to get a photo up of the middle tomorrow it was getting dark tonight by the time I was finishing up.

Hope you enjoy what I have done so far.

looks good! You can copy the IMG code and past them into the thread so people dont need to go to the photo album.

That pink in the seats is a little over the top you should pick up a can of vinyl paint and cover that up. :)

haha Ya I already have some in the garage :) to get rid of the pink, I dont know what color scheme the boat was but an assumption is it had some pink pinstripe or something.

I wish I had storage under my side bow seats. All I have is the anchor compartment at the very front.

I completed the bow sides today and will post photos tomorrow since it is now dark. For the bow sides to get the curve I used 1/4 inch ply and cut slits in the back as suggested in previous posts, I mounted them on the bow using 1 1/2 inch length 1/4 inch SS machine screws using T-Locks to hold the screws, let them sit on the boat after soaking them with water, I then coted them with resin after a few days and slapped them back on.

I was able to upholster today and they held their bend.

Re: 1987 Bayliner Capri 1900 Interior Restore

This weekend was a good weekend to finish the bow section of my boat.

Below is the finished bow section, it's not a professional job but I think it looks good and I have had good feedback thus far, maybe the next boat I redo the interior on I will take the time to learn how to sew. I think I am going to replace the center back rest, I kind of rushed making it a few weeks ago.

I need to add another post so I can get the last 2 photos uploaded.

What staples and gun are you using? I got some stainless staples, but realized when I got home it says on the box "not for marine use".
The seats are looking good.

Hi Hogger, sorry for the late response.

I picked up a air stapler and stainless steel staples from a local shop here in GA, I paid about 60 bucks for the stapler and 22 for a box of 5 thousand SS staples, believe me it's great not running out of staples.

I found a site online that may have what you are looking for and the prices are very reasonable compared to the people selling on ebay.

http://www.perfectfit.com/15979/Upholstery-Supplies.html

They also have a lot of bayliner replacement parts much cheaper than ebay as well.

Still restoring stuff. Joannes ran out of 1in foam so I cannot do the side panels till later this week, I'll be taking the time waiting to redo the wood for the side because I am not happy with my first set.

I'll post more pics later this week.

Re: 1987 Bayliner Capri 1900 Interior Restore

Hi,

I worked all weekend to complete the sides and with installing an amp and running new wire for the new head unit. The radio I bought at west marine came with a pair of speakers and I already had a pair installed on the seat bottoms so I customized the sides and used the speakers instead of having them sit around, I was not happy when I first bought the radio package but it ended up working out.

Below are the pics of the completed Vinyl recovering. I will go through the post and organize the photos of the entire project. The blackberry camera resolution kind of sucks.

All I have left to do in respect to the vinyl recovering is to replace the vinyl along the walk through pieces that wrap around to the front, I am pretty exhausted since I have been going full steam to get the boat ready for the 4th so that part will have to wait until a later time. Yes I need to get some vinyl paint and get rid of the pink portions in the back to backs but I there are 2 females in my house hold so I guess I can get away with it LOL

Looking good. I've been working on mine here and there between kids and work, but I think I'm getting close to being done.
I'll get some pics up soon.
My side panels were a pain because they had accent trim parts and these folded over sections. I just ended up making it all one flat panel and adding the trim piece.

Almost done, just need to finish the backrests for the rear seats, and decide if we are going to buy new lounge seats, or recover the ones we have.
