I have our network Ethernet cable hooked to a wireless router and although it works for the internet I cannot access any of the other drives on our server. However if I hook the Ethernet cable directly to my lap top it gives me complete access. what gives???

Re: computer networking question

Could be two things... and most likely both....

a. Firstly, your line from your ethernet is probably hooked into the port that would normally go to a cable router or other Outside internet sorce. Doing this makes your router a firewall that prevents you from seeing everything on the network because the wireless router is blocking it. Usually on residental type wireless routers, there is one port dedicated to outside and 4 or more ports dedicated to inside wired connections. You need to have that network cable plugged into one of those four ports, instead of the one lone port.

B. Also, before adding to your network as above, You need to make sure that the wireless router is programmed not to assign your addressing. (Turn off DNS) Usually out of the box, this is turned on, and if placed on your network as described above, you will have two devices fighting to assign your computer an address. When this happens, devices on one addressing device don't know the other computers exist that are getting their address from the other addressing device and you will end up creating all kinds of connection problems over the whole network.

Re: computer networking question

If you run vista or win 7, you need to make sure that the wireless you connect to is secured and that you have designated it a trusted network by selecting the "Home" network option. If you choose office or public then vista or win 7 will not allow you to enable network discovery and therfore cause your problem.

after reading you question again, am I to understand that you are placing a router between your server and your pc? If so then you can give it up, the router will not let you access drive and shared resources on the internet side of it unless you have established a VPN (which is a whole other can of worms).
