Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

Wow, that captain is in idiot, plain and simple. No excuse for that, and nothing funny about it. Could have killed innocent people due to his lack of brains.

The root cause was the bloody Mary. Likely no knowledge of boating factored in as well. Sorry if I am adding another criticism, but to use the word "stupidity" would be an understatement.

I hope the attendent called the USCG to report the offender. That spill should result in a fine plus jail time.

Why is your battery switch inside your engine compartment??
Thats where Sea Ray puts them & on 99% of the other brand of boats out there also puts them there.:)
Where is yours ??.

The first thing I do upon tying up to the gas dock is turn the battery switch to OFF. It's what they teach you to do in boating class!!

Does every boat have a battery "off" switch?

Every boat I've ever owned or looked at or been on had them. :)
Like this one and without keys also.

My old 2002 Searay BR176 didn't have one either. Funny how some people assume...

I am glad to hear you guys are all perfect!

I have not done this but have been close.

On my previous boat the rod holder was about an inch away from the fuel fill, so you unscrew the cap and if your not paying total attention you may choose the wrong hole.

Take it easy on this guy it happens a lot more often then one would think.

Question.... I don't have setup like this but..... looks like an opportunity for some company that makes marine adhesives/labels/stickers to produce a "NO GAS" sticker to place on that rod holder cap.

If the boater misses it, the attendant shouldn't.

I've owned numerous boats, as well as tinkered on countless more. I can only think of ONE non fishing boat (cabin cruiser) that had a battery switch. The vast majority of non fishing single battery boats do NOT have one.

(fishing boats/multi battery boats are of course the exception)

Ummm, no, I won't take it easy on some idiot who can't pay attention to a simple thing like where the fuel goes. Do people not realize gas can go boom and kill people :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I agree.

As well as the fact that he pumped a TON of gas into the boat before noticing it.

Here's the bottom line.

A lot of Rich people get so used to having everything done for them and having everyone ELSE THINK for them, that they get quite DUMB. Not all, but a lot.

Take your average spoiled guy + alcohol + having to gas up HIS OWN boat.......and I can see it happening.

What does that mean?

This guy should have his fueling privileges revoked. If i were his first mate I would let him know that he's not allowed to touch any gas line again.

Amen. Of course no one is perfect, but I bet the majority here don't pull that big of a boner. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and hope you don't get any chunks on you when darwin comes to visit them...

Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

I agree with the two other posters about this happening more then we know, happened to a friend on his fishing boat some years ago. I dont have a master switch on my 20' monterey. Im curious about the blower deal. If you have a blower that is "Bilge rated" then what is the problem with running while fueling? If that is not safe then it shouldnt be safe to run after fueling WHEN THE FUMES WOULD BE MORE ABUNDANT?

Running the blower WHILE fueling sucks the fumes into the bilge.
