well I started tearing into my 2.3 volvo penta that exploded 2 days ago. was running perfectly then this ( cpics) happened! absolutely no warning! when I first looked @ it I couldnt' tell much, just that the engine block was in pieces. I found some pieces of shrapnell I thought was the cause. A piece of a bolt and what was left of a nut. after tearing everything apart I am finding myself in a chicken or egg situation. 1) chicken- cam that drives the dist. broke, fell into the oil pan, wedged in between the piston rod and the crank breaking the piston rod causing everythig to fly apart. or 2) egg- pison rod breaks for whatever reason/cause sending shrapnell flying and causing the damage. either way the engine is shot and no amount of thought or debate can fix this. I've found a car with the same block and all my attachments are in working condition. so Im probably gonna fix it again.

Yeah!!

Nothing like a rubber band marine engine!!!

If it were me, I would replace it with a 3.0L engine......

The 3.0L was never hooked up to the270, 280, 290 style drives. So there are a lot of missing parts needed to hook it up. Like flex plates, pilot bearings, exhaust tubes, etc.
It could be done, but it sure would take lot of work, money, and special made parts to make it work.

The rubber band engines in volvo cars sure could take a beating. And I mean a beating. Overboost, lack of oil changes, over rev shifts, cold starts with no warmup, etc......

Sometimes it will just break for no reason. As long as the new one runs good, slap it in and be done with it.

Those ford inlines are pretty bulletproof. They are loud little engines and can mislead people If they are trying to come apart. If the big end was still on the journal the piston and or pin could have failed. Like you say it doesn't really matter but I can't help but want to know what did it!! Find running engine, buy oil and gaskets, replace, go boating. :)

I had the same thing happen to an indentical motor, the only difference is that mine failed in the rear of the block, had a hole in both sides of the block you could stick your arm through- and it still ran!

Sorry but that motor is all Volvo. And they have a good reputation for being durable and reliable, except for maybe this one. But sometimes sh-- happens.

Have a great day

Rob.

Re: bayliner explosion you wont believe this!

i can see the resemblance between this engine and a ford 2.3 i wish it were I can get plenty of those for cheap. the exhaust & intake manifolds dont match and the thermostat housing location is a little different. as it stands upgrading to a 3.0 is not financially practical. I already have everything for the 4cyl. no new parts to buy except the block. I've heard that those 2.3 fords can be adapted to take a 4bbl and will scream, they're popular in dirt track cars I think. you know how rumors are. I may research that to see if a volvo can be done the same way since they arew so similar.

Don't waste your time trying to go 4bbl on a 2.3, there just isn't enough power to be made. You will either need a small 4bbl, which you just won't find with a marine rating, OR you will have to cam it and spin it to the moon, but then you have resonance reversion to deal with.

Re: bayliner explosion you wont believe this!

If i were a betting man, and i have seen alot more than my fare share of engines turning inside out, Id have to go with the Egg.
The rod broke. Then started puching the hell out of everything it could reach until it stopped running. Only very rarely does a rod break and not know a hole in the block and break the cam.

In fact i one (a race motor) in the garage that just did a simular thing just a wekk ago. This one the piston shattered and the wrist pin went through the cylinder. But the cam survived without a scratch.

By the by. A little FYI
At 3000 RPM on any motor, every piston goes up and down 50 times per second. Think about that for a bit. Still wonder why things break?

Anyway, good luck with the rebuild.
