Rarely do connecting rods, wrist pins, pistons break on their own. More than likely the bearing gave out or the rod bolt broke. Most manufacturers do not install high performnce hardware. When an engine over-revs the rod bolts stretch and break or the bearing walks over itself. Sometime just plain old fatique will cause the bolt to stretch and break. Most engine failures are caused by one of three things: Lack of lubrication, hardware(nuts&bolts) or timing failures (belts or chains). Hint: If the motor is in good working order a small investement in these three will insure extra life to the motor.
