I just replaced the water pump in my 140 Mercruiser with I believe to be an "R" out drive. Ever since putting the foot back on the engine dies when I put it in forward. With the engine off I notice forward will finally engage at almost WOT. Any ideas on if maybe something I overlooked when I put it back together?

If it worked before you worked on the pump then I suspect your off 1 spline on the lower shift shaft.

Thanks for the info BT and that is kind of what I suspect as well. Any idea if it would be best to remove foot with it in neutral, forward or reverse?

sounds like you need the official Mercruiser manual from the "Adults Only" section too.

Sounds like you should have maybe replaced the shift cable too!!When they get old they hang up keeping the shift assist open and killing the motor.J
