On weekend trips and staying in a motel...do you guys rent a slip for the day and leave your boats on the lake/river or do you retrieve, drive to motel, sleep and launch the next day??

I know it depends on the facility and the atmosphere that weekend.
It's Pirates Cove in Needles on the Colorado

Stayed at several motels and just left the boat on the trailer in the parking lot. Even though she's 30' long the hotel staff always provided advise on where to park.

I'll be staying in a motel for a week while fishing the Columbia river gorge. I'll have my boat on a trailer and will be parked in the motel parking lot. For added security, I'll be placing a "driveway" motion detector alarm on the boat and the receiver will be in my room. Hopefully I won't have the receiver bell ringing during the night :(:D

Just sayin' ...

The motion detector inside the boat will notify you if someone boards and enters, but it won't make a sound if they steal the whole rig. You may want to put a lock on the trailer hitch.

If we stay at a hotel on the lake, we leave the boat in the water. Most of the time though, we stay just off the lake a block or so. Then, the boat comes with us to the hotel. The staff have always been more than helpful in letting me know where the security cameras are at and in getting me a room with direct view of where it will be parked.

Just let them know when you arrive so that they and you can figure it out then, and also so that you are not disruptive to other guests.

As for the lock on the hitch, It does not leave town without one in the reciever and one in the tongue.

I have stayed from Chicago to Madison, WI, to Mountain Home, AR and many other places with my boat and never had a problem.

Re: Beware: Newbie Question (Motel Staying)

My goal every trip is to not touch the trailer. Some trips this isn't possible, but at Pirates Cove it is if their slips are available. I did a write up a couple of years back on Park Moabi which is the same place but the camping side.

As far as security is concerned, what's the difference between in the water or in a slip? Probably safer in the water . . .

One tip about that section of the Colorado, coooooooold water, if you want to swim head down below the Gorge to the Lake :)
