Hey Colm. Prop selection comes from in-use data. If we know what you have, and the performance numbers you observe now, we can help you with this choice. You should probably read this first. Generally speaking, we run lower pitch props for pulling power or acceleration, and higher pitch props for speed. The "best" is a compromise that leans towards your intended use and loads.

Be aware there is no "right" prop. It's kinda like saying what's the best gear and tire for this hill on a wet morning, and then what's the best tire and gear for the Motorway in the sun. Depends on the car, the gearing, the diameter of the wheel etc. With props we get one gear and one tire for all situations while we have that particular prop installed. Probably a poor analogy, trying it on for the first time . . . :)

Not disagreeing with needing data etc, but as a guide only I have a fourwinns 170 with a 4.3gl volvo penta (190) and 1.65 ratio SX drive. Standard was a 23pitch 3 blade aluminium prop. I changed to a 23 pitch mercury high five and am very happy with results. Holeshot and ability to hold the speed in turns is much improved when used for wakeboarding. It also still does 46mph (on GPS) at 4600rpm with full tank and 2 people in less than flat water. For wakeboarding will hold a good 2-3mph lower speed(approx 15mph) before it drops flat on it's face than with the 3 blade. I was looking for a 21 pitch but got a deal on a secondhand 23p and now have no need to change. That should give you an idea.:)

I'd go with a 19 or 21 depending on boat loading and what type of skier ( single ski 200lb dude or double ski 80lb kid) big difference!
