1974 glastron bayflite. 140hp Merc i\o. The lower is the r series.

Just replaced the impeller(water pump)(it was pretty ugly), pulled the lower off in neutral so it would be easy to put back on. went to put it back together and check the gears and FNR all matched up. but then I noticed I forgot the bolt on the inside for the fin above the prop. so I had to pull it back off. in my efforts i must have spun the prop and also the receiving end of the shift bar on the upper. Now I cannot seem to get the gears to match up no mater what i try.

I lowered the trim all the way down cause I hear the gears "fall into place".

When you are replacing the impeller you should place the throttle\drive full forward. Also make sure your shift cable is lined up on your lower unit bracket. You should lock the prop going clockwise with the gear on the lower unit. It should slide right in but a merc kick might be needed! Hope this helps!

merc kick, for mating a lower to the upper????

Motormaniac801. put the remote at the helm in fwd. manually rotate the shift shaft in the lower into fwd by spinning the prop ccw when viewed from behind the prop. when the prop locks ccw, it's in fwd. put a bungee on the prop to keep it in fwd. once in fwd, if you go cw at all with the prop, it will shift out of fwd. so always have a keep a slight load on the prop ccw. put the water pipe in the upper, a little grease on the ends, put the guide tube in the water pump housing, a little lub on the ends. put it together. if the spines don't mate. spin the prop ccw further to line them up.

don't forget the washer on top of the shift shaft.

fwiw, it's easier to put the lower back together with the upper on the bench by a lot..

ah ha. Ive been trying to do it in neutral. I could lift it in neutral while holding the prop. but i couldnt do it by myself and always ended up spinning it just enough to nock it into gear before lining up the water tube, drive, and shift shaft.

Looks like im not the only one with the problem...

Re: changed impeller. gear not matching.

you need to get s/m #2 and read pp. 6A13. there's 8 steps to mate the lower and the upper. the s/m can be found in the adults only sticky at the top of the i/o forum. look at number 9 and get s/m #2.

two items i forgot in my previous post. are lub the splines and don't forget the quad ring for the lub passage between the upper and lower.
fwiw. step 2 is put the allen head bolt back in the lower so ya can put your trim tab back on... ;)

Re: changed impeller. gear not matching.

When you tilt the lower forward to line up with the upper it will slide in to forward. So then you are f on lower and n on upper. That is why forward is the gear to use. Also it is put in forward ANY time you pull the upper or lower. This is for Mercruiser OMC is N. Make sure the shift shaft is pointing forward.
