My pointer is all rusted out, I can't match it up to the repair manual diagram-it has 5 points, mine looks to have 6 points. You cant buy just the pointer-its part of the timing cover. Can ayone get me to TDC from my photo-I plan to drill a scribe into the block in preporation of the tab falling completely off.
THANKS!

EDIT Picture WAY too big, changed to link. Please keep pictures to 640 pix max width. or post as a link

Yes, I found the diagram your talking about, but it does'nt match the tab thats on my boat, there are less points, plus a deeper vally that represents TDO.

Ayuh,...Did you even try to Clean the tab,... In the picture, it looks nearly Untouched...
It also looks like the Zero is in the 2nd valley north...

You can always pull #1 sparkplug, turn the motor,+ feel for #1 to come TDC...
course, havin' the valve cover off to see the valves helps, less you be 1 turn Off...

atomb posted while I was peckin',... There's yer Answer...

In any case a new timing cover looks like it may not be a bad idea anyhow !

In my defence I was looking at the diagram in the ignition system.

Here is how your timing mark is marked under all the rust.

You will find this picture on page 3A-12 of manual 13. Under Valve adjustment.
Merc doesn't always use EXACT pictures in their manuals.
Valve layout and adjustment on some big blocks are shown using drawings of a small block.
