Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that a boat is just like a car. Well it's NOT! First thing you need to do is read every post here (trust me it will probably not be as long as yours) and take it to heart. Then after you have read and applied what you learn TAKE A COURSE! It helps!!

Surely not. Can't imagine why anyone would be upset about trying in earnest to learn in order to keep from repeating his mistakes and being rewarded with calloused remarks about his, and particularly his son's, weight.

Sound like you are the one getting on someone's ***.

Not until you jumped on mine. If you scroll back to where this started you will see I suggested in some situations shifting weight can help, a couple of others agreed and you jumped in basically saying we were mistaken you said shifting weight can't help a boat plane faster. I posted that I respectfuly disagreed and posted about my rowboat I had as a kid that would not plane without shifting weight.

Further, it is not necessary to quote my entire post when it's the post right above yours. If you disagree, find a way to manage your emotions.

This one is actually pretty funny considering you can scroll up to you're last post and see that you quoted my entire post just above it.

For some reason, that upsets you to the point of being insulting.

Once again all you have to do is scroll back, I believe the first insult thrown was......

Now I've got a 3.5 pony rowboater explaining planing. Stop the madness.

I think that refers to my 3 1/2 horse row boat that would never plane unless I shifted weight.

We won't even get into your half assed attempt at conceeding.

maybe he is out enjoying his boat instead of arguing about it on the internet...

I can feel for the OP, he started out with a legitimate question. To quote from my most interesting post.

Nah, he was just being silly. Some of us were joking along with him, others were not. Think it finally got a little too testy.

I agree it became silly very soon and I reacted in kind, however, there are some out there that are way too serious and a bit scary

I am here to learn and to add where I think I can offer my input, either silly or serious.

Lighten up a bit huh?

Okay, I thought you were joking in that post, hence my references to the A-Team van as a good tow vehicle. Sorry about that. However, I do agree; some of us take ourselves a tad too seriously. That poor guy got hammered. To be expected in these forums some times I guess.

This forum is sometimes harsh, but accurate.

I hope the OP does come back but if he did read the responses, he understands he was putting himself and his passengers in harms way. If the only price he pays is a little embarrassment, he got off easy. The outcome could have been much worse.

Re: 1st time out on my own / what did i do wrong?

The OP is a new boater and new to this (and most likely any other) forum, and this is the welcome he got? I have to admit, I've been active on a variety of forums for a myriad of topics for a number of years and this is probably one of the most hostile sites I've ever seen. The only exception would be computer gaming sites which are by and large populated with kids. The kids on the gaming sites simply suffer from an inability to articulate their thoughts coherantly.

I've seen a everything here from "Ayuh.......learn to drive your boat" (WTF kind of response is that?? In what world is THAT helpful?) to "Maybe you and your family should loose some weight" on this site.

People are asking for help and this is the help they get.

AWESOME!!!!!!

Wow this thread has really gone off topic. But I don't find this forum to be all that hostile at all. I frequent sites for the NFL and two for Volvos, and this is quite mild compared to two of the three I'm referring to. On the one Steelers site the posters are all Steelers fans and they are downright mean to each other. I actually quit going there it was so bad.

How much 'help' is the sporting fan community looking to get from each other? How much money and time does a Steelers Fan invest in his hobby and how does another Steeler's fan help that guy out when he's in a jam?

i agree with Shrew. THis site is very hostile and biased. God forbid you ask a "stupid" question, have anything less than a peterbilt for a two vehicle, or have a boat < 17 yrs old....

Re: 1st time out on my own / what did i do wrong?

I'm relatively new here, and outside of this thread, I've not seen anything but very helpful and insightful answers in this forum thus far. I participate in a lot of forums, and actually started a few from scratch... one that has gotten quite large. I usually read a bit in a forum before jumping in to see the way people get help... how they ask questions... look for advice available before asking for more.

This thread got started on the wrong track right out of the gate, and it had nothing to do with boats, and everything to do with expressing a question in a clear way that sets up the best chance to get help. I think the first few responses, mine included, were kind of reacting to the mega-paragraph and trying to understand what it said. Once that was out of the way, there was the lack of good judgement that had been exhibited by the OP in what he did... which is going to draw a reaction as well. How it got into a debate about what planing is is beyond me, but discussions can go all over the place... especially when the thread is a "drive by" question. Had he come back and responded to the responses to make it a dialog, then the natives wouldn't have gotten restless and took a few tangents.

Bottom line is he was very lucky that no one got hurt, and hopefully he will listen to the advice that IS in this thread and go on to really enjoy boating... safely.
