1957 Evinrude 35 hp (flywheel)

I just recently came across an old whitehouse barracuda with an evinrude 35hp. I got the boat, trailer, and motor all for free and really want to try to get this thing running. I am trying to get the flywheel off to change out the coils and replace a spark plug wire, but i cant seem to get the sucker off. I've taken the bolt off the top and can't seem to find anything else holding it down. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Isn't there 3 holes around the flywheel nut to install a puller?

Use the 3 holes, a decent harmonic balancer puller, and Grade-8 bolts. Screw the bolts in 7/16", no more and no less, then give it h--- with the puller. If necessary, give the center bolt of the puller a light rap with a hammer while lifting on the flywheel. DON'T beat on it with a sledge. Apply enough pressure and it will pop off. Be wimpy with it and take all week.

EDIT: That's only half the story. When you put it back on, the shaft and flywheel tapers MUST be clean and dry and you MUST use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 60-65 foot pounds. Must means Must.

I just pulled one over the last two days ('67 33HP). It took two days to come free. Leave it under tension with the harmonic balancer puller over night. Got my puller at NAPA for $25. Man was I happy when it popped today.

BTW, leave the flywheel nut on loosely to protect the threads while you pull it. It will pop suddenly and with some force and the nut will keep things under control and make sure the threads don't take a beating.

I just pulled the flywheel off the exact same engine last week. Used the bolt puller from Harbor Freight which was $10 or something, but had to buy 2" #8 hardened bolts from the hardware to fit the wheel (make sure to use #8). And I just used the starter ratchet ring which was installed via those holes as a washer on top of the puller. Then, I took out one of the bolts on the outer edge of the flywheel and installed a longer screw sticking out for leverage, then put a long drill spike between that and the flywheel nut to steady as I turned the torque wrench. Took 2 days of little nudges and sprays of PB Blaster to pop.
