All,

I think I understand the importance of properly laminating and sealing my new transom

what I have not found out yet is if I need to put a sealant between my wood replacement transom and the actual aluminum hull

any suggestions?

thanks in advance

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

Does the transom have knee braces? Does it have through bolts to bolt it to the outer skin?

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

no wood at the bottom of the transom, just some angle bracing

there is a wood piece at the top (inside) that I will be replacing as well

looks like it just bolts onto the outer hull

I am still tearing into her so I might be able to get some pictures of the inside in a day or two

Like to see a pic of the inside of the transom as well. I am not sure but I do NOT think that the original boat would have had wood on the outside of the boat for a transom. Maybe but not sure. How big of motor are you wanting to hang on her?

I think that huge piece of plywood is someones band aid repair :( That is NOT a standard aluminum design and defeats the aluminum hull.

Post a few photos of the whole boat and include the inside of the transom. Post a picture of the rating plate.

That boat looks very narrow?

Bob

thanks for the input

the boat is a 17 foot 59 Crestliner Flyingcrest

I will post pics as I get more torn out

looking at pictures at retrocrestliner, this seems to be the norm for that boat

they all seem to have externally mounted wood transoms

thanks again for the info and I will be getting more pics soon

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

I did some research and it appears that you are correct. This boat has an exterior mounted wooden transom. Here is what I recommend. I would use 3/4 inch exterior grade plywood. Give it two coats of epoxy and then give it a layer of glass. Make sure and get the edges too! Do the same with the wood on the inside too. Get the pics of the inside as soon as you can.

Woodonglass

thanks for taking the time to research my project, Much appreciated

thats why I love this forum

still wondering if you would use any adhesive/sealer between the transom and the aluminum hull

any thoughts on that

thanks again all, much appreciated

Yes, I would sand the aluminum and then apply some PL to adhere the wood to the transom.

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

Hey bip,

I would also oversize my bolt holes and fille them with epoxy and then redrill them the correct size for the bolts. This way You will ensure that you will NOT get any water intrusion into the wood. Do everything you can to seal that wood PERMANENTLY!!! Pay close attention to the edges and to any holes you put into the transom. Screws should be pre-drilled and epoxy coated as well. You do NOT want to have to replace it again. Time spent now will give you more time on the water in the future.

I'm just sayin....;)

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

I would NOT use PL to attach the wood to the transom. You could use 3m4200 which is non-permanent ........ if you ever need to repair you need to pry it away. If you use PL you will have to grind it away.

Since you have the old transom off....... you need to treat that aluminum before installation if the wood. Any and all bare spots should be wiped with vinegar, dried, sprayed with zinc chromate primer and any color paint.

The reason is regardless of how tight you "think" the seal is..... things will get between the layers. If the wood is sealed the aluminum is stall at risk for corrosion attack.

hope to have the transom off this weekend (of course I need to sweet talk the wife into helping lift the motor off)

I will post pictures of it as I go

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

Of Course the Supreme Mariner is correct. the 3M 4200 is a much better Choice and for all the right reasons. ;)

Re: transom replacement on aluminum boat

Nope..... just guiding you through with experience and what I have seen happen here on iboats. When someone uses the wrong adhesive or encounters a boat where it was used in the wrong place....heartaches.

Wait until some posts that they can't separate a lower unit because they used 3m5200 when they did the water pump  Yup have seen that here too.
