Spent the 4th Fishing got more bites than I'd hoped for but not from the fish

The mosquito's were hellish, no matter where we stopped they were there in squadron strength, and vicious too, we had to quit after a couple of hours.

I can't use anything with DEET in it, makes my skin feel like it's burning, anyone got any ideas how to stop these beggars biting ?

you could try one of those new things ive been seeing commercials for lately... its a little thing you clip on your belt and it looks like a little fan blows out some sort of repellent.

other than that, just wear some long sleeves and long pants. the nice lightweight fishing stuff with all the vents in it is what i wear. you get plenty experience with the the bugs in swampy florida!

Only bad thing about the thermocells is they do not work real good when you are moving are in good wind. The stuff needs to be able to kinda form a cloud in your area and moving too much or wind kind of kills it.

Agreed as far as the wind but mosquitoes don't bite on a moving boat. A thermocell does pretty good in most wind conditions when straped on your side. If being used to protect the entire boat it only works in dead calm winds.

Take a look around for the repellent wristbands. I had some once and they worked good. The problem is.... somebody gave them to me, so I don't know what brand to tell you to buy. Sorry.

I always bring a fistful of Cuban cigars with me when fishing. Keeps the bugs away. And annoying people trying to edge in on your favorite spot :D

I discovered that Banana Boat spray on sunscreen works pretty good. Don't know if it has Deet in it but I was left alone while my buddy got eaten alive the other night.

Tie a couple bounty fabric softner sheats to your belt loops, I know it sounds dumb but it works for me. not just mosquitos but all bugs.

Rub a fabric softener over your skin, then either pin it on your clothes or hat.
side note: this also works for a bad hair day, honest :)

Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

I have one of the Thermacells a grey one, and they do work well for yard work etc but inevitably when I'm out on the boat there's a breeze and the thing don't work as well, so I guess I need some kind of bug spray but not one that has DEET in it as if feels like it's burning my skin.

I've tried most things including the wrist bands and they didn't work at all for me, tried covering up, tried dark clothing and then light colored clothes didn't seem to make much difference.

There has to be something out there that does the job without us having to spray chemicals all over us. I've tried eucalyptus oil, garlic, even popping vitamin B tablets, none of them work. Haven't heard the one about the fabric softener, thanks for that guys, I'll try it this week end.

The trouble with fishing is, the best days to get a bite is when there isn't much wind, the mosquito's seem to think the same

I have always just used Citronella. It works great on the horses too. You can buy it in a spray or a cream. It does have a smell, but, I don't think it's as bad as Cuban Cigars tho. lol

Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

I must have the right blood type to those buggers, cause I always come home with many more bites than anyone else.

I use the dryer sheets often and they seem to help. Stick with the more well known brands, the general types don't seem to work as well for me. Also I've heard to spray listerine mouthwash, however I haven't tried that one yet.

I broke down and bought the clip on bug fan that's on TV. It works pretty well except the refills are pretty expensive.

If the bites are itching really bad, rub alittle toothpaste on the bite. It will reduce your need to scratch them.

Ok, this is what I have been told over the years
First do not wear perfume and only wash with ivory soap as the little heathens are attracted by smelly stuff.
Do not eat banana's???
They are attracted by your breath (C02?????)
And +1 on the avon stuff.
and if all else fail's stay dirty and eat lots of garlic!

I HATE MOSQUITOES!!!

I moved to VA from PA a couple of years ago and the mosquitoes here are crazy. They got these striped ones here that leave welts on me and then scar up my skin.

I wish I could find a mosquito that was 6ft tall and weighed 250 lbs. So I could punch it right in the face!!!

Since you are now living in PA, keep your eyes peeled, it won't be long till you see one of our 6 foot, 250 lb mosquitos! Just be ready to attack before it does.

I too have tried the garlic, the drier sheets, the Skin-so-Soft, even the DEET. The only thing that works for our pesky mosquitos is a .44 slug between the eyes! (Or a good swift slap.) If you don't kill them, they will try to kill you!
