Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

Hey CB, I've been using that XL5 you sent me for a few weeks now it works better than anything. Ive made some up of my own following your recipe we've been using that for the last week when we go fishing or to the ball game, can't say we never got bit but its only on the odd occasion and then only when the bugs have been real bad. I've sent you a PM with my phone number give me a call asap, theres a market in Florida for this stuff, call me.

Hey c'mon now wasn't it me who started the thread? do you find it odd that I'd be replying when someone shows up with a product that takes care of the problem I had with bugs. Can't a guy show his appreciation when someone responds by sending 30 bucks worth of stuff that cost him another 30 bucks to ship it to me and 5 or 6 other guys on here. CB was also decent enough to email me to say it was OK for me to make it and sell it. He didn't want any money from me even if i start making and selling it. If someone does me a favor I'll say thanks, especially if I might be able to make a few bucks. I was layed off most of 2009 every $ counts right now, hope its still OK to sound enthusiastic and appreciative?

I guess in these cynical times we all look gift horses in the mouth, it's just a pity you guys don't know the rest of the story.

Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

I've been off line for a couple of weeks, I took a 3,500 mile road trip to call on relatives and some old fishing buddies, maybe for the last time. So after my absence in here during the last 3 weeks or so there's a bit of catching up to do, a bit of explaining to a few folks who have asked why I've been giving away my formulation and a few other things, what the motive was for that as it seemed too good to be true.

Well, I didn't want to get into it but I've had a fair number of PM's and calls from Matt asking me to put things straight, I promised him that I would when I got back home.

It seems some folks have it in mind that I was trying to sell XL5 in here, rather than give it and the formulation away. Bottom line on that is XL5 isn't sold directly or even indirectly to the public, almost all of the product made to date has been donated to individuals and organisations working in Africa, it wasn't my intent to solicit sales of XL5, sorry if it came across that way.

I cut a deal with Matt and a couple of other guys for their benefit not mine, not a single cent has changed hands, there's no obligation nor was there any request made by me for any income from any future sales of XL5 that they make.

It aint an easy topic for me to debate or disclose as it's quite personal, but in a nutshell at age 62 it looks like my number is up. I've been battling prostate cancer for a few years now, click on the link below.

http://onthefencefilms.com/blog/index.php?p=291

Up until recently I've managed to hold my own, but in the last 3-4 months the disease has come out of remission with a vengeance and the treatment plan that I've been on recently doesn't seem to be working, so even though I haven't given up the ghost I may have just a matter of months left.

When you are in a situation like this you start making plans and getting rid of things that you won't be using, trying to find a good home for a few things, if you have something that someone needs like that boat decking I dropped off in Ontario then it feels good to have helped someone out. Same thing with the XL5, I might not be around much longer but I'd like to think that XL5 will be as I've put years into it.

Not a lot I can say other than the above.

Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

Sorry to hear that, Bob. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your loved ones.

As for the XL5 you sent me ... haven't really had a chance to give it a "real" test on the ticks, but the mosquitos hate that stuff! Thanks a bunch for sending it. I will be heading over to Ghana probably late fall or early winter. Did you say it was a different formula for over there? I would like to be able to make some there for our staff and workers. I know it would be appreciated.

Thanks again for all you have done. I am also still interested in the "water purifying buckets." I have gobbled up all the info you have sent to me and dug a little deeper also. VERY interesting and potentially VERY HELPFUL to the people of West Africa.

Re: Damned Mosquito's !!!

Sorry to learn of your health issues Bob.

I hope and pray everything works out for you.

As for the sample of XL5 you sent to me, thanks again. Yes it works well on skeeters.

I did manage to get 5 days in the fields, shearing Christmas trees.
Used it daily and it worked well.
Seemed to work just as well the days I put it on my hat/shirt/pants, instead of my skin.

I can't say if it really helped on the wood ticks or not.
This is not prime tick season, but we usually pick up a few.
This year we only picked up one.

It will be interesting to see how it works next spring.

Peace be with you.

Hello Aspeck, thanks for your kind words, valued and appreciated.

If you need anymore product to take to Ghana then just drop me a PM and I'll ship some out to you. I'm hoping that I can get one more trip to Africa while I'm still fit enough to go, one of the reasons I've been spending months at a time there was knowing that I'm on the slippery slope I'd like to do my bit before the axe falls. I have a treatment plan commencing in the next week or so but my Dr told me not to be banking on a successful result.

When your faced with situations like this you don't want to see all the work you've done come to naught, that's why I spent time working with people in Africa to make sure they know how to make XL5, they seem to be up to speed now so that's sorted. Same kind of thing with the boat mods that I've done, some of them {the inserts and the air deck covers that I posted in here} work really well, so after lurking in here for years I decided to do a little write up for folks looking to "protect their decks".

As for the differing formulations, well, any of the 5 different variants will work worldwide at a repellency rate of at least 80%, but if you use the one made for the specific location that you are in then the repellency rate goes up to around 95%. The product I shipped you is intended for use in North America and Africa, so you have the "right stuff" there, the one with coconut essence in it. But, as mentioned, if you need anymore I'll get it shipped to you, no problem, it would be a pleasure for me to be able to support your work.

While you're over there feel free to pass on how to make an effective mosquito/tsetse fly repellent, all they need for the most part is soybean oil and coconut oil or coconut essence {the stuff you can buy in those tiny bottles}.

As for the water purifying buckets, well, there's a bit of work to be done to get them into production, and I might not be able to complete that work, but, as above feel free to talk to folks about it to see if someone can take up where I may be leaving off. As you say there's a need to sanitize water, not just for drinking, but also for "washing" clothes, the only thing needed once you have a container "lined" with nano particled TiO2 is sunlight, and there's no shortage of that in Africa, it's just a matter of time before someone uses nano technology to do provide these benefits to folks who are in desperate need of sanitized water that doesn't cost $3 a gallon to produce.

All the Best,

Canada Bob.

Hello Roscoe,

Glad to hear that the stuff worked for you, it's a product/project that I take pride in, took me years to figure out how to make an effective natural / non toxic product.

As you say it will work when applied to clothing, but it's best when applied directly to the skin. The secret to the effectiveness of XL5 is the "smell of death" that insects pick up from the soybean oil, so although it hasn't been field tested on ticks it's highly likely that they would find the smell of XL5 just as off putting.

I'll be starting a chemo course soon, but chemo doesn't have a good track record against prostate cancer, but there seems to be little else to throw at it right now, so it's fingers crossed. If I'm back on my feet by October I'll be off to Cameroon for a few months, but I'll be able to log in now and again from there, so keep me posted.

Thanks for your concern and consideration Roscoe, it's appreciated.

All the best,

Canada Bob.
