I was just glancing back thru post and if your engine is not a Xr2 it dont have a advance module it has a idle box stablizer and theres a big difference between the two. E-10 (ten percent blend of ethanol) has a BTU content 3% lower than gasoline thus the usage of more fuel to create same results and also is a little better oxygenate thus the reason it cleaner burning and engines respond to a little fatter jetting. (Head hung in shame) I will be doing a inline 6 rebuild sooner than expected due to some av gas and jetting last saturday....:(

The modual is pictured in my post. It says right on it on a sticker 'Advance Modual'.

The motor cowls say XR2, but when looking up the serial number, I'm thinking its just a STD V6 150. I don't know for sure, the cowls haven't been changed stated the previous owner (there was 1 owner prior to them), so I'd like to think it is in fact an XR2. But I do not know how to confirm it.

The service manual shows an advance modual with the same wiring as mine for the std 150.

Here is my cowl.

Serial Number is: OB 129668

Serial number is on top of the block, and on the motor mount. They both match.

No problem.

I honestly don't know what it is anyways. It could be an XR2, it could be a Std 150 from all I know. Not sure there is a big diff???? Or not sure how to tell for sure.

Must be because XR2 makes it sound 'Fast' right? :)

Mariner Magnum or Merc XR2.. Both the same motor and I think the only difference from stock is in the exhaust plate and tuner. Not 100% sure on that so don't quote me.

Pretty close. Tuner (length) 'bout tha only difference in reg. 150 and mag/XR

Most of the XR's have a small bore LU that makes them a bit quicker on the lake. They are tuned so they are right at the top of the 150 HP window right out of the crate, typically about 162 HP at the screw.

John, tha "little" ones came out on tha 4's and early 6's with taller gears. Although a "little" case with two ta one gears does help tha performance on tha 2's..........Just a little info.

Interesting.

So how would one know 'for sure' if he had an XR2, since the serial number seems to get me parts for a '150 v6' (doesn't specify XR2 or anything 'crazy' like that)?

Here's the only pic of my lower that I've got....Likely doesn't help???

I've been trying to look for SS props, but unsure of 2 things.

1) Is it a 'small' case or a 'normal' case
2) Should I stick with the same size 14" 19pitch, or turn something a bit different to get more rpms?

Michigan Wheel (yea a MI company!) has a selector that works pretty slick.

http://www.miwheel.com/PropSelector.aspx

I wish someone had a dock and "loaner" props to try out to help, the selector is slick but ya never really know until you get on the water with your boat. Its a lil cost prohibitive to try out several. I had two recomendations, based on varying weight guesses, and would have liked to see the difference.

That would be pretty sweet. A prop trial bsns. If you set it up somewhere good, you could charge a small fee per prop per 30 minutes or something, and have em sign something or give a CC number incase they don't come back or trash the prop.

Man that'd be something....I bet a lot of guys would be interested in that (depending on location, you could travel with a trailer load of props! LOL)

I tried the selector, no option for Mercs?

The prop shop I deal with will let you try a prop for a day, provided you leave credit card info, and don't rototill with it. He's even asked me to test a prop or 2 for him just to let him know what I think.

The smaller LU,s use a prop that has a 4 inch bore, and the standard LU uses a 4 1/2 inch bore. The LUs are bolt interchangable, so even the serial number doesn't really mean much.

A stainless prop is enough thinner than aluminum to grant a considerable performance edge. Also you can usually get away with surfacing them a bit, where a V6 will rip the ears off an aluminum prop driven like that.

My XR4 is hot enough I needed a 24 inch prop to hold it down. There's very few motors that'll pull a 24 inch 4 inch bore prop, so I found one that the prop shop was trying to sell and got it for a hunnert bucks. I surface it a bit, and get decent top end, without sacrificing a neck snapping hole shot.

Only the Xr4 & Xr6's came with the small "inline" lower unit, all the Xr2's was a standard 150 with :200 divider plate,200 tuner and advance box and made about a extra 10hp.. As for your boat it has a non-planing hull so stay with a large diameter prop(13 3/4 or larger) or a 4 blade aluminum...
