HELP! Please!

Usually, I don't ask for help, I just give it. However, this has me stumped. I an exchanging my old lower for a used replacement, due to a minor mishap that happened a few weeks ago. When I get the replacement, it has the XL shaft, and I need the L shaft. So, since my old shaft is fine, I set out to replace them. Here's where I am confused...

I removed the prop shaft cage, the reverse gear, and the pinion gear nut. Everything (impeller, plate, ect) is stripped from the shaft. However, I cannot get the shaft out! My understanding is that after the pinion nut is removed, I should be able to pop the complete shaft out of place by hand.

I am scared to try any grip-and-hit tricks, because the replacement has a 2-pc shaft, and I need both peices out, as I am putting in a one-peice. If anyone can help me, PLEASE do. If you need further info, PM or call me 859-757-9767.

Thanks,
Chris

Also, I forgot the important info... The Powerhead is a 1985 Evin. 150 XP, and the lower is a 1992.

Did you remove the bearing retainer on the driveshaft? The driveshaft won't come out until that is removed. Did you price out buying the top part of the two piece driveshaft, instead of swapping the two?

I am not sure what a "Bearing retainer" is. I have checked parts diagrams and lists, and cannot find what you are referring to. I have not checked on purchasing a new upper, though. I am into this boat enough. I purchased it as a running boat 6 months ago, have had in the water 30 minutes, and have spent most of what my wife will let me spend on it. So, unless someone were to want to trade a Long Upper for a long complete, I don't think I could afford it.

Bearing retainer is under the waterpump. It has 4 bolts, and retains the bearing (hence name) and the driveshaft. It is plainly visible on parts list of gearcase.

I see you removed the pinion gear nut, but did you remove the pinion gear itself??? You need to get that off the drive shaft and then it will be free. I believe the gear has a taper that the shaft inserts into. Sometimes you have to give it some leverage to get the taper to break loose and the pinion gear will fall out from the bottom, and the shaft will pull up from the top.

I see the bearing retainer now. It is listed as "Bearing Housing and Seal." Anyway, yes, that is removed, as I can see the bearing assy from the top end of the shaft.

In response to the other poster, I did NOT Remove the pinion gear. I tried that just a few minutes ago, and I cannot get it to budge. I am having difficulty getting a grip on it because the prop shaft is taking up most of my room in the bullet, and I cannot get that out with the pinion gear in. So, I am at a kind of catch 22 here. Thanks for the valuable info, though. I was not aware I had to remove that (I though that pulling the shaft would cause it to just slip out).

Re: Evinrude 150 Driveshaft Removal...

UPDATE:

After trying for several hours to remove the pinion gear, this is what happened. I tried putting pressure on the gear from the shaft side to "pop" the gear down. Didn't work. So, I tried pulling the driveshaft straight out. Didn't work either. I tried driving a wedge between the prop shaft and pinion hub (tip of drive shaft). Didn't work. So, by now I am using all kinds of words, and even making some up. I put my pry bar on the pinion hub, and pull against the prop shaft as hard as I can. The drive shaft popped free, and I was able to remove the shaft and pinion gear. I inspected the gear, and chose to replace it with the other one which was in better shape. After greasing the bearings, and putting the replacement driveshaft in, I can finally say I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now, all I have left to do in the bullet is install the pinion gear nut (easier said than done) and reassemble the lower. The next "Dammit" will be those aggravating lock rings (seriously, does anyone know exactly how many pounds of pressure those take to compress, just out of curiosity?).

I intend to have this thing on the lake for a wet run within the next few days, and hopefully be crusing down the river next weekend!

Chris

PS - thanks to all for your assistance!

The pinion gear is only available as a matched set with the forward gear so substituting a different used pinion gear is not recommended.

Driveshafts have to be shimmed to the correct height for gear tooth meshing so before installing the shaft, take it, the pinion, thrust bearing and upper bearing carrier to a dealer to have them use the special shimming tool and install the correct shims.

With using a different pinion, and if you don't shim the driveshaft, all I can do is say I hope it does not turn into a grenade inside the gearcase if something breaks or comes apart.

Glad you got the pinion gear off, that can be tough.

Please do heed the advice above after going through all this work. Use the matching (old) pinion gear becuase they are a set...and take the shaft to a dealer so they can shim it for you before reinstalling.
